01 XLT Sport,
That was an excellent post you wrote, but I believe your time woulda been better spent scratching your butt, while flipping through channels on the TV with the remote.
You wasted far too much energy on those numbskulls.
Don't get me wrong, I admire anyone who believes in a worthwhile cause, and does their best to educate the public in the hopes of bringing about change.
Nothing wrong with that. Where the problem lies (for me) is their approach. Any respect I might of had for them was lost as soon as I learned they were encouraging people to plaster their stupid stickers on peoples vehicles
You and I could sit here. and debate the merit of gun control.
Suppose we don't agree, we could still debate it without being disrespectful to each other.
I enjoy a good old fashioned debate any day of the week, and just because someone doesn't agree with my views, doesn't give me the right to damage their property or beat them up.
What people fail to realize is that sometimes there really is no right or wrong answer.
Both people can be right and wrong at the same time (if that makes any sense)
Also, sometimes you just have to live with the stupid people in the world, and know that no matter what you do, or how hard you try, they will always be stupid.
This is off topic, but it's a great example of exposing the stupid:
I got into an argument with a guy I play backgammon with the other day.
(You don't have to know how to play to follow this argument)
Backgammon is played with 2 dice. (that's all you need to know.)
So Mike (my "I know it all" opponent) is trying to tell me that with 2 dice, the odds of rolling any 1, 2, or 3 is 50%.
So I kindly correct Mike, and tell him the odds are actually 75% (27 out of 36 numbers will give you any 1,2, or 3) "it doesn't matter what the 2nd die is, as long as one of them shows a 1, 2, or 3"
Now he is calling me names, screaming and yelling, and just being his normal self.
(he's not a guy that ever admits to being wrong, EVER)
But I tolerate him because he always pays when he loses (which is most times) so the aggravation is worth the profit)
So he's telling me how the "true" odds are 50%, and that he studied stats in school, and knows what he's talking about.
So I calmly explain to him that he's wrong, and take my time to show him why.
I even wrote down all the dice combos on paper so there would be no argument.
1-1 2-1 3-1 4-1 5-1 6-1
1-2 2-2 3-2 4-2 5-2 6-2
1-3 2-3 3-3 4-3 5-3 6-3
1-4 2-4 3-4 4-4 5-4 6-4
1-5 2-5 3-5 4-5 5-5 6-5
1-6 2-6 3-6 4-6 5-6 6-6
The above table shows all the possible dice rolls when throwing 2 dice, there's no trickery here, it's all there.
So now I remove all the combinations that don't contain a 1, 2, or 3:
4-4 5-4 6-4
4-5 5-5 6-5
4-6 5-6 6-6
So there is the proof, I show him how 27 out of the 36 combinations will allow a person to roll a 1, 2, or 3.
I didn't say "I think" or "I'm right, because I am" I showed him in black and white, and even after all that, he still claims I manipulated the numbers, and he maintains the odds are still 50%
I know this is getting to be long winded, but... so even after showing him the above, Mike's position is that the odds are still 50%.
God could come down from heaven above, and tell Mike the same thing, and he won't listen. His mind is closed, and refuses to learn anything.
See, that's the problem with "know-it-all" types, since they know everything, they will never learn another thing in their life.
Those SUV haters, are all just a bunch of "Mikes" closed minded, strongly opinionated, and very judgmental. When you include the fact that they don't have a clue of what they're talking about, then it becomes a dangerous combination.
I give up on them, it's like talking to a wall. I can have a more meaningful conversation with my dog, LOL
Oh yeah, getting back to the Mike story...
Since he's such an ignoramus, all I could do was figure out a scheme to take advantage of his stupidity. (that's what you have to do with these people)
So I offered him a proposition. Since in his mind, the odds of rolling any 1, 2, or 3 is 50%, I got him to agree to the following:
He rolls the dice 500 times, every roll that produces a 1, 2, or 3, he pays me $5.
Every roll that doesn't contain a 1, 2, or 3, and I pay him $7.
Since it's a 50/50 chance in his stupid head, he's of the opinion that the following result will take place:
250 x$5 = $1,250 (this is what he expects to pay me
250 x $7 = $1,750. ( this is what he expects to get paid)
So based on that, he thinks he will have a profit of $500.
He will be in for a shock when this prop is finished.
Here is the expected numbers based on the true odds.
Out of 500 dice rolls, I will roll 1, 2, or 3 375 times
375 x $5 = $1,875
125 x $7 = $875.
-----------------------------
This leaves me with an expected result of + $1,000
Now "expected" and "effective" numbers are two different things, but with 500 rolls, I believe that's enough to get it close to the expected average.
We're doing this next week-end, so I have all week to figure out what new mod I will buy with his hard earned money.
HAHA, what a dork.

Habibi:
Excellent post. Yes I know something about the odds of dice because I love playing Craps. Your right about your odds, and good luck deciding on a new mod.
I have to say this past week I have just been having a BLAST on that I Hate Air crowd. I know I wont change there minds but people who happen to show up "thinking" about it and may read some of my post may think twice. That is besides the point, what is the best is these "people" are really begining to get PISSED, kind of like running in circles, "the sky is fallen, the sky is fallen".
Everytime they come up with some stupid reason I point out to them how they have just helped ME make my point about them and their cause and then thank them for it.
Think about that, someone thanking you for looking like an As* and making the person who you pointing out the As* right....
Anyway it seems to have them confused and off message looking for other streets to ride through, trying to make a point (of myth) and "hoping" I don't come along to thank them for making MY point for me. If you get a chance look over there, let me know how I am doing (good or bad).
I too am like you, I love a good debate so long as it does not turn into putting someone down for what they believe. I have no problem with someone believing in something with passion and standing their ground on it. I do so myself, yet I always leave my mind open to the possibility of change, one never knows what may happen tomorrow that could change that outcome of something.

Hey you guys,
I just ran into "know-it-all Mike" at the gas station.
He comes up to me and says:
"Hey guppy, I've been thinking about our bet" then he takes a long pause, so I'm thinking that he realized he was gonna lose his ***, and was now about to back out of the bet.
The he says "I did a few practice rolls at home today, and man oh man, you are gonna lose so much money"
So now we're doing the bet tomorrow at 4 PM, He's pretty eager.
It feels like Christmas time today!

LMAO ... did not think about that one when I purchased my wife and Expy...
When I was driving around 20 years ago in my 280Z in Atlanta Rush hour traffic I hated Vans, Trucks etc. Now I drive 4x4 screw so that I can see over most other autos.

Hey where did you purchase your wife at? Do they take refunds? When I purchased mine it was a lemon, they would not take back or give refunds...
I ended up scraping her after 10 years.

anti - take your pick at anything. For some reason alot of people feel the need to take up cause so that they have some meaning in their life
I'm not big on SUV's, I just wish more of the drivers would realize that that SUV's require more road courtesy and attention then cars, and that their lives are not important enough to ignore this fact.
01XLT - I know you love arguing, when the forums are up and running check out : http://www.michaelmoore.com/
You'll get a kick out of that one.

captainoblivious:
I agree with you. I don't mind people having their causes, it is their right. If they want to scream and shout about what ever great, do so. Hell they can stand out front of my house no problem.
If they touch my truck, then it is a MAJOR issue. I am not the type that goes out looking for a fist fight mind you, but touch my truck, or anything that I own, mess with my daughter, my family or friends, tis a whole new ball game...
I do love debating, guess one could call it a hobby. I have never really belonged to any type of orginazation or cause just to busy with work and my daughter.
Call me nuts, but after joining this site, and having a few friends who own SUV'S and Ford Trucks it feels like a big family. When I seen this site about "I hate the air" or what ever it is and that they are about putting some stupid stickers on SUV'S and trucks well that kind of fired me up.
So seeing I have some free time at home after work I thought why not head on over there as "Ford Man" and make some post and show how some of their beliefs don't make to much sense. There is a few who don't support putting the stickers on now, and are somewhat admiting this (oil) problem is not due to just SUV'S and full size trucks (imagen that).
Sometimes the best way to fight a fire is a lot of people throwing buckets of water on the fire, rather then just watching it grow.
I might check that site out you mentioned.

Habibi, there was an easier way to figure out your dice roll.
First die will be a 1, 2 or 3 50% of the time.
The other die will roll 1, 2 or 3 50% of the time.
So if the first die rolls 4, 5 or 6 50% of the time, half of those times will show a 1,2 or 3 on the second die... half of 50% is 25% so 25 + 50 is 75%
By the same token 25% of the time you will have a 1, 2 or 3 on BOTH dice.
Yeah he studies stats, but he applied the wrong formulae
