The New Ford 6.0L PSD isn't strong enough to compete with a VW

That's right

I have previously been very impressed with the 7.3L PSD that we have in many of our company F250 / F350 / F550 trucks. I was even more impressed by the early reports and focus group info regarding the new 6.0L PSD.

But then I got my new AutoWeek mag and there it was, hiden in the text in an artical about the vehical on the Cover, the soon to be sold in North America VW Touareg SUV.

Of the several engine choices, VW is offering a 5.0L V-10 Turbo Diesel with 313 HP @ 3750 & 553 Lb Ft @ 2000 with a 4200 RPM redline, 0-60 mph in under 7 seconds, all the while delivering 24 MPG!!! AND this in a SUV smaller and lighter then my EXPY!!!

wWith the 6.0L PSD not even here yet it could use a couple dozen more lb ft of Torque to face the competion.

That's pretty sweet. However, the 6.0 is, if I'm not mistaken, 325 HP and 560 lbs of torque. I do think it has to wind up a tad more but I think it'll compete!

Yep, Your right. . . the VW tow rating is only 7,000 Lbs too

My point was this:

I was initially very impressed that Ford managed to get a 50 HP and 25 Lb Ft improvent out of the new PSD while decreasing the displacement from 7.3L to 6.0L

VW has managed to get the same basic numbers from just 5.0L of displacement. I know that the VW engine will not have to live through a 300k plus life of being overloaded with tons and tons of crap, but it is mighty impressive all the same.

Do not forget the new 4R110 five speed tow haul automatic tranny they intend to put behind that new 6.0 too. That thing looks like a Duramax Allision killer in every gear but reverse. That we should wait on!

I think i'm going to skip the 6.0 and get the 300hp cat. Just for kicks, and it looks getter and you get a lot more attention.

you can see the vw at vwvortex.com, it looks rather impressive. it will initially be brought in for approx 35k w/ a v6 and standard suspension. the v10 has an airbag suspension controllable from the cab for height and ride stiffness. they also want to bring it in w/ the W-12 engine w/ 450 hp and 550 lbs (approx) of torque. they built it w/ porsche who on the cayanne platform. quite the piece of machinery and should push the bmw x5 out of the suv market for all but the bmw worshippers. on vw.com you can see the truck concept car they built off of the same platform, about the size of an f150 w/ the same v10 diesel. for what it's worth, the germans have been doing a lot more diesel development than we have so it is quite apporpriate that they have stronger engines per cc with better mpg. my tdi in my jetta has gotten 48.5 mpg for the first 18k miles and 51 mpg for the last 5k and it's still not really broke in yet. this is both city and highway driving.

let's put a 10,000lb trailer on the back of both and let them race.

Oh wait a minute, a 7,000lb limit on the VW.

hmmmm, so if its not for hauling what's it for?

Diesels are not supposed to be high revving race engines (or you would see them in Nascar, F1, etc)

Sir, Request permission to talk freely--Granted..

Imho--Good points for both of you...Diesels can be fast(I have one-fast)...I also have a strong one for towing...Double duty(Super Duty)...

I can say that I can gross 20K and still run low 15's(on the way to 14'S)...and get 20+mpg on a safe(ask Goochy) 7000 lb truck...Whats amazing even more is this is 15+years technology..

This is impressive enough for me....Knowing that Ford is not going after any mileage numbers until you go to the hybrid diesel electric...Then step up to 70mpg...

I have the best of both worlds..Have this truck that gets better fuel economy then the 150 gassers..with twice the power...$29K not $50k for a new technology V10 VW...

Ford is not going after any speed records, that is what I do...What Ford is going after in its diesel market is an affordable truck that is armed with more muscle then ever thought possible..
Ford is not going for the diesel car market...Everyone knows Ford is holding the truck market...Every branch of it..

Ford is not sitting idle, they have upted the anty and released the new design G2..They are back on top for power and technology...We buy trucks to use them as such..and I prefer diesel flavor...

i would say that the vw's towing capacity is limited more by the suspension than by the engine. for what it's worth, a vw diesel golf just won it's class against a bunch of gas powered cars in scca so yes, they can be made to run fast. sure, the vw is expensive, no doubt about it but comparing it to an f350 dually is apples and oranges, they are made for completely different things. if i was hauling a 5th wheel i think a king ranch edition of the f350 dually would be about the most perfect vehicle in the world but for hauling the family around it is about the most arduous thing to drive as i'm sure you all know due to it's having the turniong radius of an aircraft carrier and wider than most anything on the road. truth be told, if i had that king ranch dually i'd see if i could get it without the bed so i can put a flat bed on it for some real hauling. vw is going after the bmw x5 with this truck and in that segment it will kick butt you have to give me that one.
