Question Dumb question

I am not very informed about diesel engines, but here goes. I was reading about the difference between 4 cycle and 2 cycle diesel engines. You know that the 2 cycle ones require air to be forced into the cylinderwith blower or turbo. I was wondering, does this mean that the turbo diesels are 2 cycle? Pardon my ignorance. Thanks alot - Martin

I believe the 2 cycles have to use a blower not a turbo..turbo's have lag time and the cylinders need to evacuated every time..so the 2 cycles have to have pressurized air to scavage the cylinders..They have diesels with both turbo's and blowers, the turbo will feed the blower, however the blower supplies pressurized air all the time...There are cylinder ports at BDC that the air flows into...while the exhaust valves are open..

Usually a turbo diesel, is speaking of a diesel that has a turbo, I guess it could be a 2 stroke with a turbo....There is also diesels that are natural aspirated that dont use turbo's...

Not all turbo diesels are 2 cycle...

2 cycle diesels have to have a blower-but can also have a turbo..

4 cycle diesels can be N/A, turbo, or blower...

Its just different ways to deliver pressurized air to the cylinders..
