Diesel engine and oil consumption

Tried a search.. you know how that goes.

My friend has a PSD with 45k on the clock. He tells me that he is going through 2.5 quarts in 3,000miles.

Is this normal for a diesel?

How often does he change his oil, what brand, is it dirty black, what type of filter?????

That is not normal for people that take care of there diesels...

If its abuse, then yes that is normal...

There is a reason why he goes through that much..

Oh yeah, is it over filled????

hmmmmm i thought something was wrong.

as far as abuse the guy works in construction and the thing is either in stop and go driving or idling alot. he swaps oil every 4k-5k miles.

i've never observed him filling the oil just going by what he says.

thanks for the replies.

i'll ask him again if that is really how much he is using.

Yes he would qualify for severe use then, extended idling, dusty conditions, towing, etc...This will use more oil then normal...

He should also be changing his oil at 3k, espically if using non-syn..

If overfilled or dirty then yes it will consume oil big time!!!

I change my oil at 5k intervals and it comes out brown not black...black is too long to wait to change...soot contaimination...

I just noticed that my 7.3 used about one quart of oil at 4,500 miles since I switched to Valvoline. Maybe, I will try a different brand. When I used Rotella oil, the engine never used any oil at 4,500 miles. I now have 32,000 miles.

I used to use Rotella and then I tried Delvac 1300, it was ok, now I use Delo and it is good...

Some people said that the Rotella did not work too good for clingability...They have syn oil out now...
You are going to lose about a quart between changes anyway...

All engines have oil consumption...

I have noticed if you check the oil when hot it seems to read lower than actual. I usally wait for a hour before testing. If the PSD is over filled it will pass the oil. Check it in the morining and keep an eye on it. My has not burned a drop. I currentally have 20k on it.
