Question Changing inline fuel filter.

Ok, I changed all other filters in my 2000 F-250 Crew Cab except the inline fuel filter in the frame. Has anyone here ever changed the fuel filter in the frame?? Do you still need the same wrench as with the other trucks?? Please let me know. Thanks. Bugman.

Thumbs up

I've helped my husband change out my fuel filter. Very easy job. On my truck the fuel filter is just about in the middle, towards the back, on top of the engine with that Powerstroke cover over it. If you go over to the diesel board, they have excellent directions for doing this job yourself in the FAQ section. www.ford-diesel.com How many miles on your truck?? I only change the fuel filter every 15k but I do keep a spare filter in the truck in case I pump in some crappy fuel. Haven't yet!! Where did you pick up your fuel filter? (please tell me it was NOT your ford dealer)

Hi Tina,
I have changed the fuel filter on top of the engine. I was talking about the inline filter on the driver's side frame rail. I was wondering if anyone here had changed it. Bugman.

Yes, it is indeed an inline fuel filter. I have a friend who is a diesel mechanic I will drop the truck off next week to have him change it. Bugman.

let us know how this filter change goes. I've not heard of changing any fuel filters except the one on top. Also, let us know about the filter that you buy to replace the one you remove. Thanks

Hi Tina,
I forgot to answer your first question. I purchased the fuel/water separator filter from my local parts dealer which cost $40.00 plus tax. It only took me about twenty minutes all together to replace it. My truck currently has 18,000 miles on it. I use it for work purposes everyday so, by next month, it will probably have over 21,000 miles. I will let you know about the inline filter change. Bugman.

Bugman: are you saying you paid $40 for the fuel filter?? If you say yes to this, then please just bend over and let me kick you I buy my fuel filters from a local trucking dealer that deals with International trucks. They're about $15 bucks each. Plus if you go over to the diesel board, they have a supporter that sells them in bulk for a decient price. Please post back and tell me that I really read your post wrong. But if not, then at least you know now where to buy your next filters from (never, ever from the dealer)

lariat4by4,
I had my mechanic change it today. I was standing there the whole time and it is a fuel filter. It had the same part number as the fuel filters for the F-150's. Maybe the previous owner had it installed. Who knows.

Tina,
The oil filter cost me $18.00 and the fuel filter cost me $44.00 from my local parts dealer. I found a parts dealer that specializes in diesel parts and the fuel filter price I think is around $20.00 plus tax. I do appreciate the information. When I bought the truck last month, I just bought a filter just to change it because, I had no clue when it was last changed. Thanks again. Bugman.

Bugman,,, this is the diesel forum....You need to take that gas stuff over to the super duty forum...

There is no factory stock fuel filter on the PSD in the frame rails....

Its on top the engine...and they are only $15 for Racor's...

If its a diesel then its after market...

Mach1 and lariat4by4,
I spoke with the former owner of my 2000 diesel and he said that he installed an aftermarket inline fuel filter (ultilizing a Motorcraft filter) after the fuel pump. It sounds to me that you two should get one as well. Bugman.

i dont own a powerstroke anymore, but whats the purpose of a extra filter? Ive worked on ford trucks for 8 years (since before the powerstroke) and never seen a fuel filter problem that would call for an additional filter. But the fuel here in NC could be cleaner of something. I'm not knocking you for having a extra filter in there, but you have to understand that i couldnt imagine your truck having one since ive never seen anyone put one on a truck like yours, and i was beginning to think you had a gas engine, thats all.
