General F250 diesel questions

Hey guys, I am still in the process of selling my jeep to get a truck, but I've been thinking and I have a few questions. What are y'alls opinions of the pre-powerstroke 7.3IDI non turbo diesels? How difficult would it be to install a turbo on those trucks? I would probably be looking for just a cheaper truck to tow, and I know the diesel would probably be a little overkill for what I'd typically tow, but I have my pap's car to use as a daily driver. I am going to have a newer (as in 99-03 PSD or roughly same year Cummins) diesel truck once I'm out of school, but I'd like to get one of these older ones to learn how to work on them so I am familiar with them once I get one for good. Also, whats everyone's opinions of the 6.9L diesel? Last question for now...how are the transmissions behind these older diesels? I prefer a manual behind a diesel.

Hands down love an IDI over a PSD for their simplicity and ease to work on. The TurboDiesel 7.3L from the factory in '92-'94 is OK, but I'd rather a non turbo truck and add a new one myself so you know it is good. 6.9L is near the damn same thing to the 7.3L, you just won't get an overdrive stick with it from the factory. The ZF S5-42 behind the 7.3L IDI is a solid unit you won't break.

I'd also look for a F-350 over a F-250 to get the solid Dana 60 instead of the TTB Dana 50 if you want 4x4.

Start lurking in the basement IDI section of oilburners.net

What kind of fuel mileage is everyone seeing on their 7.3 PSD's? I'm looking for highway and towing. I know what I can get with a 5.9 Cummins, which is really kinda what I want, but they are expensive!!! A 7.3 PSD would certainly be my second choice only slightly behind the Cummins.

It ain't too bad, I'm starting to gather the parts to do a turbo instal on my 6.2L IDI. I've squeeeked 19 out of my 7.3L rig, but that drops a few with towing and goin' fast.

I can tolerate the Cummins, but would never like the Dodge truck. Had to run one last week and my friend took a video of our thoughts.
