1995 f250, Is this a fair price?

One of my friends is selling a 1995 f250 xlt super cab at his lot, and he is asking 4850 for the general public, but would sell it to me for 4200 cash.

The good:
4x4
powerstroke
flawless paint
little if any rust on the frame
inside is clean
all power opions still work
spay in bed liner
Claims it had no leaks

the bad:
drivers side smokers window is missing (broken out)
needs tires
278000 miles on it.

I crawled in and around it, but my buddy was out of town and had the keys, So I haven't test drov it yet. he claims it runs like champ, But I'll see later this week.
So is it too high for the milage? Would you be concerned about that many miles on this motor? Also, what kinda milage do these trucks get with an automatic? Just asking because I am selling off my fuel econmy vehicle for it if I buy it.
Thanks guys

KBB private party in "good" condition is $5000, deduct for needed repairs and a set of tires.

Before you think it's going to save you money, see how much diesel fuel costs in your area in comparison to gasoline. You will be lucky to get 20 mpg.

Your mileage is really going to depend on whether or not it has 3.55 gears or 4.10s and how you drive. I think the $4200 is high, especially from a friend.

I'm not looking to save money on fuel by buying it, I just dont want to go back to running around in my f150 and getting 11 to 13 mpg.

What would you all offer for it just going off what I've told you about it?

Winner winner.

It's not that you can't get good mileage with the 4.10s, it's just that you'll have to go like 55 MPH to get the same mileage the 3.55s would get at 70. Easy way to tell what gears it has is take it on the highway. If the motor is at like 2250 RPM at 70 MPH, it's 4.10s. If its at like 1800, it's 3.55s.

An easier way is get the axle code off the door jamb sticker.
