6.0 Diesel a NO NO or OK?
6.0 Diesel a NO NO or OK?
Hey guys I own a F150 but looking to move into a F250 with the powerstroke. I know the 6.0 had some problems or was at least bad mouthed with the group I know. I do know one guy with a 06 F250 with the 6.0 and he has done nothing but pull with it and it has 130k on it and the turbo blew at 65k but that was it. So should I stay away from it or was it just the first year or two it was bad or what? Any and all help appreciated
the egr cooler NEEDS deleted and ARP headstuds installed, once those two thing are done they are pretty reliable. 06 and 07 are the best years, but the other years aren't that bad. Yes they did get a bad rap but the aftermarket has fixed alot of the problems. If that truck has a tuner besides a SCT beware, all the other tuners are canned tunes with high timing that eats headgaskets, on the other hand if the truck doesn't have a tuner get an SCT with custom tunes it will put it at 420hp and run low 14's high 13's

where in ohio are you, I'm in springfield. The egr cooler delete cost inbetween $400-500 and probably another $300-400 to have installed. Head studs are $400 and cost $1500-2000 to have installed. If you had headstuds and delete installed at the same time you woud only have to pay labor for the headstuds. Their is a place here in Ohio called unlimited diesel that can do headstuds with no problem, if you live close to me i could help you install an egr cooler delete.
The SCT i'm talking about if the same tuner they have for the F150's. It is a tuner that plugs into your OBD2 port and reprograms the CPU. With a SCT shops can custom tune a 6.0 from 300hp up to 420hp with the stock turbo and it also tunes your transmission for longer life and if you ever install a bigger turbo or bigger injector they just sent you new tunes that you download into the SCT.

I posted the same question a few weeks ago. Here's some more opinions:

I have an 05 F-350 supercrew long box with a 6.0 at 110,000 with no problems at all. Checked the history on it before I bought it and it was clean. Put a SCT custom tune in her and have loved it! I would be lying if I said I wasn't holding my breath for head gasket or egr problems!

Going from my personal experience with my truck I would not buy one that is out of warranty. These things are to damn expensive to fix out of warranty I think that I have over $2300 in repairs in 18 months of owning my truck and it will roll over to 152K some time next week. I love the way the 6.0 pulls when you are towing and when they run right they are an absolute blast to drive but as posted before its not a question of if something is going to break but when is it going to break with the 6.0.
I would be really cautious throwing a tune in one of these trucks with out head studs and new head gaskets especialy if its out of warranty. I have an XCal III sitting in my closet at home that I am dying to try in my truck but until I get head studs it is not going to happen.
Here is what I have replaced since I have owned my truck. There were some minor things I fixed besides these major things listed below.
Turbo (30day/3000mile warranty replaced that one or it would have been $1800)
Two injectors ($1300 parts and labor)
FICM ($800 replacing and reprogramming)
