Price check please

Went to the dealership and they quoted me $185 to do my trans oil??? I asked 'why so much?' - the answer was " We flush the tranny" of which I said "yeah" and then they said since I have a Torqshift tranny it uses 'special oil' ~ really???? Am I off base to be lookin' at them like they have three heads

Also I noticed a rear pinion seal leak - they quoted $190, but I reminded them that I have the 5yr / 100k extended warranty on my truck. They said the pinion seal isn't covered under the diesel engines warranty. Unbeleivable!!! I had to remind them AGAIN that my truck is the V10 and that I bought the extended warranty through Ford when I bought the truck. The service manager then say's 'Oh, yeah...well...it's covered and it'll just be your deductable' (which is a c-note)...Finding competent folks these days seems harder and harder

I asked my dealership the same thing a few weeks back, they quoted me option #1 at $99.00 to flush and re-fill or option #2 for $199 to flush, remove the tranny pan, inspect the tranny & something else (can't remember), re-install pan, & refill. I thought these prices were out of line, if they are quoting you $185 for a flush & fill, I can't imagine what they would charge for option 2.

Then they asked why since my truck is 3 1/2 years old with a whopping 26,000 miles on it. Because I haul a little camper once in a while.

That's true - I have have done it all my other vehicles (not the pinion seal though). Since it is still under warranty I like the record keeping at the dealership - just in case. Anyway, I was asking for a 'price check'.

Sheesh, I knew someone was going to say that

Pinion seal or diff cover seal? I got to thinking about it, and I thought a pinion seal would be more than $100 or whatever...

The pinion seal is the culprit. I can understand the price for that...and as mentioned that will be covered under warranty - of course, I'll have to pay the $100 deductable. It's the trans fuid change price that has me boondoggled...

That's not bad. You can't expect them to work for 3 pennies and a pubic hair. They have employees to pay, insurance, taxes, rent or loan, equipment/tools, advertising, phone bill, electricity bill, water bill, etc.

Does the torque shift trans have a torque converter drain? If not. It's too much of a pain in the *** to change the fluid at home, since you can't drain the TC. Just pay the $100 for their labor and stop being such a cheap ***.

First off - all I was inquiring about was a price check....

But...since you obviously know nothing about me all I can say is:

Cheap ***? Look, The same dealership only charges $35 for an oil change - that's what's wrong with the American auto industry - you should only have to pay for 'competent' work for the said 'work'. You seem to be a goof that believes in 'spreading the wealth' - what a joke. Sorry, don't feel like paying good money to goofs that don't even know what tranny I have after a few years of service there..and tell me that I need 'special oil'.....

No matter, I also just got a quote from a local shop (non-dealership) who does the same service for the Torqshift all the time for $65. Oh yeah, they also have 'have employees to pay, insurance, taxes, rent or loan, equipment/tools, advertising, phone bill, electricity bill, water bill, etc.' and yet they have no problem charging a fair price Oh...maybe I forgot that they don't have a fancy dealership building to pay for either

Hey, you waste your money - I'll 'work' at finding fair prices for the work at hand :santa:

You're allowing the 'status-quo' which only feeds the greed of the industry. Being a consumer, I am obligated to find a better price that can do equal, if not better, work...it's called competition and the local shop here knows more than the folks at the dealership for a third the price - go figure...

The dealership - or as some say the 'stealer'ship is good for warranty work...and even that can be iffy,

Your transmission requires mercon SP. The capacity of the torqshift transmission is 17 quarts. That's atleast $85+ shipping worth of motorcraft fluid from the cheapest place on the internet.

I bet the shop isn't even flushing your transmission, just dropping the pan. Oh and you can bet you will be getting generic fluid that isn't even what the trans requires.

But you are getting a bargain, that's what counts!

Btw, I do all my work myself. I don't have to pay anyone to flush the trans, the older trucks have a torque converter drain. All I have to do is shop for the best price on quality products. But when you go cheap on a service, you get what you pay for.

I'm far from sharing wealth.

I concede on the price I quoted in my post- after checking with them today they charge $109.95 (prices for trucks start at $65). They do use the Motorcraft MERCON SP stuff and flush the tranny - after I asked what was so 'special' about the oil my tranny uses - I know, and they know, that the Torqshift cannot use - or should not use any other kind of trans oil..but, I don't know about 'special', maybe more like 'specific'. Also regarding the price of the oil. Usually auto shops purchase it in good quantity, so the price you list isn't the same as it would be for the average home mechanic.

But - I still don't see how asking for a price check qualifies me as 'cheap ***'.

If I can get the same work done (same fluids) for half the price done by folks that know more than the dealership does about my truck - I call that fiscally reponsible...

You may not be 'sharing the wealth', but you seem to preach it

Right - I never thought or stated about using anything than what Ford recommends (you made the assumption in post#9 that I "can bet (I) will be getting generic fluid") . Anyway, that's why the auto shop here uses ONLY Mercon SP in the Torqshift tranny of which they stressed that to me. As stated in the owners manual 'MERCON, MERCON V, and MERCON SP are not interchangeable. DO NOT mix MERCON, MERCON V, and MERCON SP......Use of a transmission fluid other than the recommended fluid may cause transmission damage'

Thanks for the link though - good read.

How many miles you got on the truck Pete? Are you ready for a tranny flush already? Good luck finding a cheaper price on a flush/fill. That seems pretty good to me. It seems like my dealership said it would be $200, when the time comes. i will gladly let them do it. I think my transmission has an external cartridge filter though.

Yeah, I may end up having the dealer do it as, again, they have good record keeping. It seems that every dealer around here is within $20 of each other and every non-dealer is about $40 to $60 under them. The truck has 36k but since I bought it in Aug '05 and with the fluctuation of temps here in Mich I was thinking it might be a good idea.

Thanks for posting Freeky!
