HMMMMM? My dads company used to have a 1996 Chevy 3/4 2wd long bed 6.5L/5-speed. I drove it several times and I agree that it did run well, but IN NO WAY will it out-run a psd. The thing would bog down terrible with a load, and one day it had enough and had some internal combustion problem and blew the motor at 59k. Dealer put another engine in, and the comp. decided to replace it with another truck. Got another PSD and absolutely love it.

Welcome Hoot! You've seen me at www.ford-diesel.com right? Sure, I believe you can give a PSD or DOdge a run for its money. But the majority of the 6.5's run slow and terrible. You may have a engine that runs better than the rest. Hey, it happens.

Bull,
They all run pretty much the same. I know enough people with these things to say that I can't really agree with you. The 6.5L TD has finally evolved into a reliable diesel. Trust me, this engine isn't the engine you think it is. Don't let your love for your truck blind you to what the competition has to offer.
Here's some of the latest improvements.
1)The '99 model engine uses the same hi-capacity engine oil cooling system incorporated in the 1997 model year. The oil pump has an increased displacement. This increase in oil pump capacity is being used to increase oil cooler flow rates 100% and allow additional flow volume to feed the 5/8" diameter oil cooling lines and piston oil spray nozzles.
2)The "green tag" injection pump now has ceramic rollers to combat wear from low sulphur fuel and a new optical timing sensor in the pump.
3)The 1999 model C/K trucks are being equipped with the GMT800 dual thermostat cooling system originally intended for the new Silverado body style trucks. The added cooling provided by a 21" 9-blade composite fan and enhanced water pump allows for a stock power increase to 215 hp and 430 lb-ft.
4)1999 model 6.5 saw a reduction in compression ratio from 20.2:1 (in the 1997-1998 models) to 19.5:1. Lower compression ratio pistons improve engine durability by reducing the peak flame temperature during combustion.
5)The oil capacity of the 6.5 was increased in the 1999 model year to 8 quarts. Up from 7 quarts used in all earlier models.
6)Also, beginning in 1999, the catalytic converter was removed without affecting the emissions certification.
AM General plans to continue with the enhanced 6.5 Turbo Diesel into the foreseeable future for both military and civilian models.

Ok, you probably got run out of Ford-diesel.com and now you start over here. COme on. We've had Dano, Dantheman, now you? How come everyone knows the 6.5L runs terrible?!?! They must know from experience. I will be out on a driving course, driving hummers with the 373 diesel {6.5} and I know for a fact they run slow.

HOOT!
Number 1-you can have your opinion...Your entitled to it
Number 2- IF you want to get kicked off, keep using vulgar language.
NUMBER 3-Why would you come over here and talk crap on Ford's at a ford site?
You maybe right about the 6.5L but I never see anymore anyways...I wonder why?

Yes, hoot is now spreading the GM nonsense here too. Hoot sounds like an ad for GM products. Thanks, but no thanks.

Even if everything hoot says is gospel and the 6.5 is the best diesel on the planet, if it's in a GMC/Chev pickup it ain't worth a sh*t...

Alright Ford Freaks,
Here's where I stand. I've owned GM trucks since 1990. Before 1990 I was a Ford Freak. The only reason I bought a Chevy was I got a deal that I couldn't pass up. It was a '89 4WD Stepside. Believe me it really made me respect GM's trucks. It looked good and drove great. But one of the things that really turned me on about it was the engine. The 350 had almost no pollution control equipment. There it sat just like in the sixties, no air pump, no mass of hoses and wires for emissions. And no problems. Just because I liked this truck didn't all of a sudden make me think Fords were bad. Been driving GM's ever since and haven't been let down once. Never broke down on the road.
My '97 K2500HD has been great! When I see the big PSDs on the road I'm impressed also. I haven't owned one so I can only comment on them from what I read on the Ford-Diesel forum and here, plus a friend who owns one. That's why you usually only see me providing info on the GM stuff.
Stop knocking me and just take in the info. It'll never hurt you to read about the competition, after all I tried the competition and found they make quite a nice machine. Test drive one if you can get yourself to. I'm planning on test driving a PSD soon. I'm very curious. I wouldn't worry about the trans cause I don't do heavy haulin.
The DMAX/Allison will be interesting, especially if they put it in something that looks like the Teradyne concept.
Stop biting me and start givin some good info on your stuff! I'll stop the language.
Here's a picture of the '89 Stepside after I installed a SuperLift kit. http://onramp.uscom.com/~hoot/cars/89ck1.JPG

so Hoot, how come you said that you can outrun a PSD's. IT seems to me that you are contradicting yourself. I guess if a ford had 20:1 compression ratio it would blow up too.

Before you start, I want you to know that I am for Chevy's too. My dad has 2 of them, and they are really nice trucks. 1998 Chevy c-1500 shortbed x-cab,350 auto and a 1996 Chevrolet Suburban. The trucks are really nice, and they get excellent mileage. BUT, I personally favor ford's. REASON: I dare to be different. Everyone either has a z71 or a Silverado. NOT me!

Duh, they'll know its me and I dont care. I said we are friendly. But dont come over here and trash on our Fords. Dont go around saying you can whomp on Fords or whatever. We are nice if you BE nice.
