2002 7.3l oil leak

I noticed an oil leak under my truck and what appeared to be the rear main. I took it to a local garage for inspection. The guy told me it wasnt the rear main but a different seal back there and it would require the motor to be pulled to fix....I was under impression that the motor would have had to be pulled to fix the rear main. never the less does anybody know what kind of seal he is talking about...or if he is trying to jerk my chain? Thanks

He could very well be jerking your chain. An oil leak from up top on the motor (the valley) will drain down on the back of the motor...

the most common oil leak on the 7.3 is the EBP rod on the turbo pedistal. fills the valley with oil and drips down the back of the engine(looking like a rear seal)

We've had that exact problem on several of the 7.3's in the fleet and it drove us wild - until we found out what it was. And yes, it looked for all the world like a different problem. No need to pull the motor, but not exactly a fun job.
