Where to find a good used F-250

We'll i'm that guy - I bought a 2006 F150 Lariat 4x4 Crew Cab brand new when I had the chance to get a F250 but at the time the 250 was just 'to big' for me. Now 2.5 years later I regret that decision. I'm looking for a Diesel F250 for a couple of reasons and I'd like your advice to make sure I'm making the right decision. Below are my thoughts:

1. If I take care of a diesel it will last me forever - vs my gas truck that I've heard will last me 200K if i'm lucky.

2. Mileage - while the price of diesel is high you still get better mileage out of them.

3. Fuel - My wife works at a universtiy and they are looking to upfit a few faculity cars / trucks with the equipment to run on fast food grease - free fuel (anyone who has done this please comment if it A: Actually works and B:If you have any issues with it so far.

4. Mileage - I have 48,000 on the truck now, and if I pull the trigger I'm thinking I should do it before I hit 50,000.

Biggest reasons why not to:

1. I still have a $15K note on my truck with Ford

2. When I was in Texas I racked up a ton of miles and currently have 48K - so I will be crucified when I trade it in.

3. Usefullness - I do not currently have a legit 'use' for a truck let alone a F-250. However in the next 2 years I will be building a house on a lake, and will need to make HD runs daily (its a stretch but it is a reason for a truck right?)

4. Noise - my wife HATES older diesels and thier noise, I would like to stay at a 2005 or newer model to avoid this daily battle.

5. Personal wants - I really love the exterior of the 2004-2007 model, but have grown to love the interior of my F-150 (same as 2008 F-250). So do I wait 3 years and get a used 2008 or get a 2005/2006 now?

I am in the same postion as you are. I looked at a 2003 F250 V10 with 23000k on it and have decieded to wait and pay off my current truck and look for a gently used 08 or 09 Superduty truck. The reason I am waiting is that right now the trade in value sucks to put it mildy.

I have a friend that just bought an 08 F250 FX4 and when he took it off the dealer lot, completely stock, he was making 8 miles to the gallon. The emmission on the new ones choke out the truck. If you wait 2 or three years and buy one, they may have fixed that problem, but my suggestion is go with a 06-07 model and they look sweet.

I can't really tell you what to do, you know the pros and cons of your situation. But, when looking for a used Superduty, I'd start by looking for a city truck that some guy used to drive to work and back 90% of the time and haul his boat to the lake the other 10% of the time. Something that has never had a 5th wheel or gooseneck hitch in the bed. If you're going to be buying a 6.0, make sure it is a 2005 or newer model.

My 2007 below is on the chopping block right now. My new truck is within spitting distance of the dealer, so this one will be sold to some lucky dude or dudette this week. Only 45,000 miles. Dayton's not far from N. Illinois.

If you take care of a gasser it will last longer than 200k miles....you will lose the tranny before you lose the motor.
