Ever wonder why Ford offers a longer warranty on new PSDs? Thank God I didn't take the bait and buy a 6.ohno PSD-that new wonder engine had just hit the market right when I was shopping for my 2003 F250 back in the fall of 2002. Most of the guys I know who bought one ended up having reserved service bays at their local Ford dealer's service center!
Hopefully the 6.4L will be better but I doubt it.Oh, and the sales guy that sold me my F250 tried his damdest to get me to buy a PSD!!
I've heard several gas Superduty buyers say the same thing. $$Wonder$$ $$why$$??
That famous quote from P.T. Barnum comes to mind but I'll pass.

I dunno how some of you diesel chest-thumpers have time to drive your "glorious" sounding twin turbo wonder machines seeing as how defending and justifying your purchase must take up so much of your time.
Why would I say that, you ask? Every thread I see here and on other truck sites with the words "5.4L" or "V10/6.8L" in the title has at least one diesel disciple who felt the need to pop up and tell everyone how enlightened and happy they are now that they "went diesel".
I'm happy for you!
But I got 48K miles on my odo and my '03 engine cost me a whopping $600. Two guys I know locally have an '01 and another '03 with 90K+ and 120K+ on them respectively. Of the three, not a single engine or drivetrain problem between them. All used to tow, one of them almost daily and driven daily year round. They all fire right up no matter how cold, run like new and need nuttin' but regular maintenance.
Come back when you put 100K on that 6.4L. Ever wonder why Ford offers a longer warranty on new PSDs??
V10=dependability, low price and more than enough power to get the job done. Don't believe me? Read the 3/4 and 1 ton pickup shootout over at pickuptruck.com.

Appreciate the attempted half witted retort. To keep shots across the bow to am minimum, I'll hold myself back and take the high road.
Good luck with your resell value. Check the sales numbers on used PSD's. Still near sticker regardless of miles.
You obviously didn't see what year of PDS I have. 06. Only a small % of 05's and up have issues and those issues are inline with the other big two...they are no different. First few years were pretty rocky no doubt...
Glad you like your truck. I like mine and I won't have another truck that is not diesel regardless if its a Ford or a Chevy.

Might wanna check to make sure diesel fumes aren't leaking into your cab??

miller, ignore the sword fight about which truck is the biggest and baddest. both trucks are awesome. if you are trying to decide between the 5.4 and the 6.8, get the v-10. my 05' f-150 had the 5.4 and currently my 05' f-350 has the v-10, and i couldn't imagine a v-8 in it. if you are worried about resale buy a honda, if you are worried about gas mileage buy a prius, and the v-10 with the exhaust done sounds as good as any diesel. i test drove both trucks and the diesel was awesome, but i don't drive enough, or far enough to warrant buying the diesel.
yes back on topic, but I think I said this before the derailment.
If you are getting an HD truck, I wouldn't get it with a 5.4 in it. I think it just pushes that motor a little much. Now if you are using for just around town hauls in the bed, sure but not with any sizable weight towing....the V10 would be a more suitable choice if you didn't want to get a PSD.
After buying our first camper, we learned to buy more truck than you needed as you never know when you will need it.

for the majority of the people out there the v-10 is more than enough. i do agree if you do tow really heavy loads the diesel is the truck to get. for the person who is towing a 27' camper the v-10 is way more than you need. we were looking at a 45' weekend warrior and there is no doubt i would have bought the diesel. the v-10 is a far better motor in a 7000lbs. truck than the 5.4. so if you are trying to choose between a v-10 or the v-8, there is no substitute for cubic inches.
Awww gosh...everybody's gettin' along and the diesel groupies are actually on topic and blubbering sweet things about the bulletproof V10!
Other considerations when you compare the V8/V10 options:
Gears-if you drive a 5.4L and a 6.8L back to back you'll see what I mean. We had a stripper work truck with a 5.4L/6sp and 4.10s. It was a 2003 and in 1st through 3rd it sure didn't feel like a 5.4L-it felt stonger in low gears than a V10 4R100 with 3.73s. The downside was the V8 setup ran out of steam at highway speeds (especially with a load) while the V10/3.73s just keeps right on accelerating.
Obviously, if the truck is for towing heavy often the only choice is the lowest gears offered. With a new 3V V10 the 4.10s are plenty for just about anything except towing at max rating-I have 3.73s and it pulls hard up to about 7000lbs-after that it still pulls but spends more time in lower gears. The 4.30s would take care of that but the 3.73s make a better unloaded driver and the 4.10s weren't offered for 2003.
Now you can get 4.10s or 4.30s. The new 3V 6.8Ls with 4.30s actually put more torque to the ground than a diesel. Even if you don't tow the 4.30 still makes it possible to put larger than stock tires on it and still be in a workable gear range.
The other thing is mileage. Most guys get better mileage with the 5.4L. But if you do any towing at all, the mileage benefit the V8 offers is gone. The V10 gets better towing mileage because it doesn't have to work as hard to move the weight.
Both engines have been around for at least 10 years and have great service records. My wife has a 2005 F150 5.4L and it's been 100% trouble free as well. I tow my atvs with it (~4500#) and it does fine-the mileage suffers like I said. It goes from about 15 unloaded highway to 10 towing.
Overall, I'd take a Superduty with a 5.4L as long as it was a 6sp and I didn't need to tow more than 4-5000lbs with it. Just my opinion. The price of the V10 option for the extra HP/lb-ft you get is a deal of a lifetime!
An extra $600 to $700 on the sticker of a new SD is nothing for the extra performance and tow capacity you get.

3-valve
For 2005, Ford introduced a 3-valve version of the 6.8 L V10. This is built alongside the 2 valve engine at Ford's Windsor, Ontario engine plant.
Output is 362 hp (266 kW) and 457 ft·lbf (620 N·m).
Applications:
2005-2008 Ford F-Series Super Duty

I got one of the 08 F350 with the v-10's and I am very happy with it, Nice power, no problems with hauling a bunch of ATV's up through the mountains, and gas milage is not much worse than my old f150. Getting 12mpg average after 2000 miles. Plus it hold my new 9'6" xtreme V plow nicely.
One question for the new PSD guys, how is the real milage on the PSD? I have seen all sorts of number. Some claiming only 8-10 mpg due to the extra fuel that is injected in the exhaust stroke to elevate exhaust temps. Others are saying upper teens for milage.
