V10 with no muffler

In my search for an exhaust for the 05 and up 3V V10 I figured I would just undo my stock muffler and take the truck for a spin and see how it sounds.

I still hear alot of exhaust air rushing like the stock pipe is not big enough. Under wide open throttle it sounds pretty good, and at idle at sounds good. It's the in between that gets me.

I realize an aftermarket exhaust will not be as loud as it is with no muffler what so ever, and will be exiting behind the rear tire. I would just like to find one that has little to no cab drone.

Oh well enjoy....

This is very interesting.

My brother has a 1999 F-250 XLT 4x2 with the 6.8L V10. When he bought it it was already equipped with a Flowmaster 70 Series muffler by the previous owner for better fuel economy and performance. However, my brother is not satisfied with this. He really wants it to sound good. He said he wants it to sound just like mine, but every exhaust shop we visited said a V10 always sounds like a whiny V6 when aftermarket exhaust is put on (such as the 40 series on a V8, only it will not sound that good).

I watched your video and I actually thought it sounded very good. What did you do exactly? Remove the muffler altogether? Do you recommend me suggesting this to my brother? Also does it rob performance capability or gas mileage?

Any advice and info is greatly appreciated by myself and my brother. Thanks.

All I done so far is just unbolt the muffler from the main pipe. The muffler is still hanging in its original hanger, just unbolted and pushed up out of the way. I have no idea what this alone would do to performance or gas mileage. I do not plan on leaving mine this way. I just wanted to see how it sounded without the muffler.

Hmm. I thought it sounded really good. But it doesn't seem smart to have no muffler at all...

Sounded good to me. Why doesn't it seem smart to not have a muffler?

I thought it was illegal, that's all.

By the way, Zaairman, NICE TRUCK. I'm really happy you got it and it looks much better without that junk all over the lower part of it. Congrats.

Technically, yes it is illegal. However, as long as it's not way damn loud and he's smart about it, then he won't have any problems at all.

And thanks...it's getting there. Next week is spring break, so that'll help me get it to where I want it to be.
