That just goes to show that you should always wait at least two years before buying a newly released model. I've seen guys driving the new '08s around and, although I would love to have one, they would have been smarter to allow time for all the kinks and defects to be worked out. Plus Ford has a tendency to add or change things on their new models after a year or two (such as the front bumper changes on both the 1999 and 2006 F-150s). If I ever buy a new truck I'll wait until the new style has been around for awhile.

Plus they might add a new feature after a year or two and you might miss it if you buy a new vehivle too hastily (like the painted mirrors and door handles on the '07 King Ranch - something that makes a huge improvement in my opinion.).

I'm sure they will work it all out.

If I would have waited for the '08 SD, I still would have went with the V10, got a great deal on the '06 so I'm satisfied.
Maybe I'm just lucky with 1st year new models, I bought a new '97 F-150 back in Feb. of '96, best truck I ever had. In 7 years I only had to replace the starter. That truck is still going strong with no other issues with the 2nd owner. Also bought a '01 Goldwing (serial 1167) 1st model change over. It was the most trouble free model year for that style for the first 5 model years, still have it and I'm not giving it up.

flames

Wow it sounds like Ford is just going to side step the problem. The way I understand it they are going to update the software to basicly power down the truck if high heat (flames) are detected in the exhaust!?? Seems to me if you have fuel getting in the exhaust and its not allowed to burn then eventually your going to have a bigger fire. More fuel more fire!
I hope the fuel leak issue is resolved soon. It does not seem like the band aid is going to solve any problems.
And Dang just getting ready to start shopping for a 250 diesel. the 97 f150 supercrew is getting tired of working so much. Maybe I should wait to see what happens.

The automaker will have dealers upgrade software for the powertrain control module, which will power down the engine under higher-than-expected temperatures in the diesel particulate filter.
so the truck will just shut down if this happens

Does this regen happen at specific times like when idling or will this thing just shut down anytime like when cruising down the highway, this can't be right, sounds rediculous and dangerous

Tough call. Maybe you can use this recall to get the price down. Have you driven one? I have, and they are SWEET. I could deal with a little fire comin' out of the tailpipe...I don't like my neighbor anyway!

The new computer program will allow for a CEL indication before it will power down the engine, further more the underlying cause is/was a faulty injector or a damaged turbo shaft leaking raw fuel into the exhaust under heavy load conditions. This will only happen under load when the egt temps are at there highest and the raw substance is ignited in the particulate filter, then exiting the exhaust pipe. There is no cause for alarm as this will not cause vehicle fire as the flames are contained to with in the exhaust system.

In my opinion this problem could show up on any of the new diesels Ford, Chevy, or Dodge due to the new emmision controls.

Yes I have driven one! It was a buddies truck. It had 40 bales of hay in the bed and was pulling a bale wagon with 300 bales on it. You knew something was behind you but the engine pulled like there was nothing back there!!! I had to get on it just once. And it pulled and pulled and pulled. WHOA brakes were decent too.
