Should I even bother with a 5.4L F-250?

a 3/4 ton for towing my trailer. Question: since the 2007 F-250 w/ V8 has a tow rating over 11,000 lbs (mine's 9,000lbs), would
it really be worth it to step up? I could really use the extra 2K lbs of tow capacity. My truck now gets pretty decent mileage, but I'm thinking with
the extra weight of the 250, with the exact same engine I currently have, it's kind of a waste..
Anyone out there with a 250 V8? Is it enough engine for that big truck and towing? Thanks!

just me , but if its for towing i would re consider the diesel, the 5.4 barley keeps the 150 happy as you know.
the diesel is what makes the f250 come to life.

I think someone gave you bad info on the V10 being better on MPG's than a PSD. My neighbor has a V10 and he gets 9 mpg average.

I can assure you that if you are getting 20-22mpg on the highway with your 6.0L, you are probably reading the computer and not hand calculating. I am not looking for an argument because you could certainly call BS on me, but I have been driving smokers a looooong time, logged alot of miles on them, and have owned three 7.3L's and three 6.0L's, and the best I have ever witnessed was 21 with my 2002 7.3L - Hypermaxed, exhausted, and intaked. That required a baby foot on the go pedal. If you are getting that kind of mileage, I can assure you you are the exception and not the rule. Spend some time on The Diesel Stop, if you don't already. I drive 50-60,000 a year, and I spend ALOT of time on the interstate driving unloaded. Pulling 18mpg with a sixer is on a good day - period. God bless you if you see actual 20-22mpg - what is your secret, or are you one of the lucky ones?
As for the V-10, I owned one. I agree with your synopsis, although we could see 16 on the highway in nice weather with the air running, and in the winter about 10-11mpg. It was in a 2003 Excursion. I am considering a V-10 Superduty this fall - youcan buy alot of fuel for the $6550 upgarde cost for the new 6.4L. OUCH.
I have a 5.4 with 4.10's and 35's. YES she does dog down on hills. I hit them at over 70 so I'm still above 45 on most.
Normally get about 12 MPG empty but I'm very heavy on the pedal. I love the sound of straight pipes.
I get between 8 and 10 towing.

Got 10 this weekend. Plus I towed with OD on most of the way.

Let me add my 2 cents here. Before i got my truck I was looking at getting a diesel. Just love the idea on how much power you can get from them, but I fell into my 06 F150. Now mine is pretty much a 250 with an 150 body. I have the 4.10 rear and the 5.4. So you could always upgrade cause the parts are around. Not sure what it would take thou.
I have an '05 F250 w/5.4 4.10 and a few mods and its more than enough for me... no complaints here BUT if I were to upgrade to a crew cab I'd definitely opt for the V10. Its a lot more motor for only $600...
V-10's seem to be flooding the market today. Found a 4x4 SCREW F250 right near my house, 2004 with 17,000, asking around $22K. Looks brand new from the pics. I agree with what some of you said. The next thing up is at least another five grand, and for me, driving just about 10K miles per year, the V10 may be the way to go.
Anyone know if there's a difference in gas mileage between the chevy 8.1L vs the F250 V10? Both crew cabs, etc.

I just did a search and found this thread. I just turned on the MPG display on that in dash computer readout dohickey on my lariat and it is hanging around 11.4 MPG in town! The truck is a 04 F150 s-cab long box (8'), 4x4, 5.4 v8, gas. 8200# GVWR with the 7 lug wheels and heavier suspension than a regular F150. How accurate are these computers? Can this be right? I'm going to do my own check at next fill up.
Any simple things I can do to improve MPG? Everything I read on here says you can, but it's hardly worth what the mods costs
Figgy

My brother in law has a 03 GMC 3500 2wd crew cab with an 8.1 and an Allison - he has yet to see any better than 10 mpg. It's a worse pig than a Ford V10. Goes like hell though and he has the tickets to prove it - the CHP is watching him now.
Now - call BS if you must, but I have a customer with a 2000 Excursion with a 7.3 - Hypermaxed, intake, and exhaust - he claims it gets 26 mpg on the highway. He says it got 19 before the mods. Sounds like an 18 wheeler with that huge pipe.
