Trans options

What transmissions are available in the 250/350 SD trucks? Is it only the 4 speed or is there other options? Is the torque shift still a 4 speed?

'99-'04 gassers and the 7.3L could get the 4R100 four speed auto.
'03+ 6.0s and '05+ gassers could get the 5R110 torqshift five speed auto.

Not quite right, but all above mentioned trucks could get the ZF-6 six speed, with a very few amount of pre '02's getting the ZF-5 five speed. Both have granny low and both have OD, just the six has a closer spread in between.

Check the info sticky in the tranny section for more details.

As of now ,2005-2007 models, its a 5 speed auto or a six speed standard.

The ZF-5 was great, really well spaced shifts, the ZF-6 is solid, but I think the gears, especially 4-5-6 are too close together

Only a few rare early 99 SD trucks got a ZF5. It was never used again after the early 99 series. I've only seen 1 truck that had it and only heard of 2 others. Extremely rare transmission to find in it, pretty much unheard of.

I appologize for the thread hijack but would a 96 F250 diesel be equipped with a 4R100 tranny?

Nope, that be the 4R100's predecessor the E4OD. They're like twin brothers from different mothers though. Not much different.

I thought the same 'till I drove an '01 5.4L ZF5. Not after '02 fer sure.

That comment was diesel specific. The 5.4L got the ZF5 until around 04 or so when the ZF6 replaced it.
