I need to hear that turbo whine

What do I need to hear it more, an exhaust or a CAI? or both? any suggestions?

Totally stock for now, any performance gains from either an intake or an exhaust are a side benefit but I know that neither one will give much compared to a tuner (which may be in the future after lift and tires and a few more miles). The side benefits of lower EGT's once I do get a tuner are good too. I do not want an obnoxious loud exhaust, just a slightly louder note than stock would be just right.

An aftermarket exhaust would do you good. I'd also get the CIA just to match up the air coming in to the air going out.

Does a CAI make any difference sound wise? Is there any drone in the cab like with the f150 CAI's?

I have heard these 6.0's with no muffler, but the cat was still on it. It wasn't overly loud at idle, my concern would be cabin drone though. Would a cat delete pipe and a magnaflow muffler give me the sound I'm looking for?
I can't see the oversized pipe in the full exhaust kits really being worth all the added cost in my case,
(I also kind of like the stock Harley stainless tip)

I have the magnaflow 4" turbo back with no cat and my truck sounds like a F16 taking off! I love it.

Ya, but you have an '03. "Cleared for take off!" LOL

Muffler delete should do the trick. If you want aftermarket system, I'd go MBRP over Magnaflow. MBRF has CAT and muffler delete delete pipes if you want them. Magnaflow doesn't even accomodate the CAT then they won't seel any pieces or parts regardless of legality of removing the CAT. I htink MBRP sounds better than Magnaflow although, with a TD you won't get the sound difference you will with a gasser. It'll still sound more like a vacuum cleaner at idle.

Get a CAI and 4" or 5" exhaust, 5" sounds sick (in a good way). my buddy has got 5" on his 02 Cummins not to mention an HX40, CAI and TST Chip with an Edge EZ stacked on top. LOL kinda sounds like a gearhead sundae.

Got to disagree big time with that. CAI won't do it. The OEM flows and filters as good or better than aftermarket, especialy for the money and won't do anything for turbo sound. The diff. in 4" and 5" is a royal PITA to install a 5" (not many out there either) and the sound won't be much, if any different.

There is no way to compare a PSD and Cummins. V8 vs I6. Cummins sounds completly different.

The newest turbo for the PSD is designed to be quieter and it is. The only way to "really" get it to sing is to straight pipe it which means federal EPA violation and while the driver may think it sounds cool from inside the truck, it sounds like chit from outside. Like a friggen Lear on the tarmack (although nothing like an '03). More than likely the whistle would drive him to shoot himself.

I've also read on the powerstroke web site that against popular belief, the 6L does need some back pressure for the EGR to work correctly. I'm stock, and have no plans to change that.

Whatever man! you put a CAI and and aftermarket exhaust on any PSD and your gonna hear the turbo better. And if you live in Cali. you might not be able to straight pipe a diesel but pretty much everywhere else you can run sewer pipe if you want, muffler optional!! and as far as sounding like chit on the outside thats a load of crap too, i've heard plenty of 6L's that sound awsome with a nice wistle coming out of the pipe. as far as the 7.3 yes it does sound kinda lame. and the CAI being an open filter versus a plastic box is going to make the turbo louder, that was the one thing i really noticed whan I put the K&N on my 03 7.3, and if you want it even louder get the GTP38R (7.3l)then it'll scream depending an boost level. and as far as comparing apples to oranges please find it in your heart to forgive me.

And why is it that everyone else who said that CAI and exhaust didnt get picked on?? =)
OH its because I talked about cummins isnt it? LOL

He's right, a CAI isn't going to crap for a 6.0L. The reason is that they don't flow anymore than the stock box meaning the turbo is breathing just fine already, it just needs help breathing out. All you'll do is spend money and not flow any more air than you did to start with. The 6.0L runs the AIS box from the factory which is a common swap for the 7.3L guys. Its not like the 7.3L trucks that did need a CAI in order to wake it up. Also as far as the exhaust comment, he's right. The new 6.0L trucks come with cats on them and its 50 state illegal to remove. Its kind of Federal deal, not a Cali thing You can remove the muffler, thats not an issue, but if the truck came with a cat then it has to stay to be legal. I also can't really agree with the whistle either from outside. I've heard the 03s and a few other 04s and they get obnoxiously loud. I like turbo whistle, but there is such a thing as too much.
