so which is it? does a CAI give more audible turbo whine?

As for exhaust, I just installed a 4" magnaflow in the stock exhaust and pulled the cat out (the cat can be swapped back and forth easily if need be). I really like the sound, just loud enough, no drone at all, the turbo is louder but not as loud as I was hoping, I am sure that a TB kit would cure that, but just not worth 4* the price that I paid for this setup at this time. Overall, I am happy with it, thanks for the info fellas.

All you'll do is spend money and not flow any more air than you did to start with. The 6.0L runs the AIS box from the factory which is a common swap for the 7.3L guys. Its not like the 7.3L trucks that did need a CAI in order to wake it up. Also as far as the exhaust comment, he's right. The new 6.0L trucks come with cats on them and its 50 state illegal to remove. Its kind of Federal deal, not a Cali thing You can remove the muffler, thats not an issue, but if the truck came with a cat then it has to stay to be legal. I also can't really agree with the whistle either from outside. I've heard the 03s and a few other 04s and they get obnoxiously loud. I like turbo whistle, but there is such a thing as too much.
first off I guess that everyone else who said the same thing as me at the beggining of this post is full of crap along with me . and second of all If your truck came from the factory with cats than yes you have to leave them on, BUT if your truck did not, which some don't, then you DO NOT have to have them on UNLESS you plane on moving to Cali. where it is required that all have one. My 2003 7.3 DID NOT have a cat., my buddys 2002 Cummins DID NOT have a cat when we installed his 5" exhaust HMMMMM.
And here's a good one to try to explain, my brothers 97 PSD had a cat from the factory, we chopped it off along with everthing else put a 3" downpipe and a 4" straight pipe exhaust. he got a notice in the mail saying he had to go down to the ref station to get his truck checked out (I guess its common for people to put gas engines in diesel trucks when the engine dies). Well they looked at it and said "looks good to me" and sent him on his way. HMMMM strange isnt it.
and hearing the turbo is not all about airflow it's also got to do with how open the intake system is, if you just took the whole intake system off and drove the truck around you would hear what i mean. the sound resonates better through a cotton gauze element than a pleastic enclosure with a little hole facing the front of the vehicle or sucking through a hole in the inner fender, those boxes are disigned to keep turbo whine to a minnimum.

This thread if funny.

1) I have nothing against Cummins and would look at Dodge 1st if I were looking for a truck
2) Sound is subjective. To me, the straight piped '03 6.0's sound like crap. They are intensly loud outside There is a reason they put resonators in the DP on many of them. '04's aren't as loud and the late '05's and '06's are much quieter. The turbo has been redesigned to be quieter. Those may be not as bad. I like the turbo, you can hear mine, but I'm not mistaken for jet on the tarmack from 3 miles away.
3) Where do you here the turbo "sound" coming from. Experts with gassers and internet access need not reply with what you've read someone post on some forum about there Dad's friends Cousins truck. (no offense) A CAI might change the tone of the truck a little, but as was said, the 6.0 intake is not the crap that others are. Have you ever heard how loud it is? You can hear how much air it's sucking. LOL Back to why Ford put resonators in the EXHAUST.
4) Does Magnaflow now accomodate the CAT? They never did, and when inquiring, they sucked as far as providing information except that they only sell full systems and the full systems were detailed on the website and had absolutly no comment on why the system did not accomodate the CAT when the CAT is federal chit.
5) Apples to oranges is what it is. There was no offense meant. A straight piped Cummins sounds sick (as in the good way) A straight piped 6.0 does not. A striaght piped 7.3 sounds completly different, and unless the the wheel has been replaced, the flutter is nausiating.
6) CAT's. If they are installed by the manufacture, you can't touch them without it being a Federal EPA violation. However, some years 7.3's had them and some did not ('03 did not, as was said, '01 did, I think) same deal with Dodge but I don't think they got one until '04 or '05. It's a very frustrating thing because inspections stations don't have a clue. They see one that has one, they assume ever one has one. Most think diesel's don't. I CA (and WA I think) they test diesel's, other states do not. That makes some guys htink it's legal to kill the kitty. Chances of getting caught may be slim to nil, but it's still a violation nonetheless.
7) It's fun to list crap with numbers and closed parentheses every once and a while. Everyone should try it.
