Question PSD Fuel Mileage

I currently own a 2002 F150 FX4, 5.4, 3.55 with 44k mi. and really like it but, just came back from Padre Island to Colorado towing a 5500 lb 30 ft trailer and averaged 8 mpg. I could always do at least 55 but I fought 30 to 45 mph headwinds so it was a struggle. Sure made me envy those people with diesels. I'm really getting serious about a F250 PSD and would like to know what kind of fuel mileage everyone is getting. Thanks

Each truck is different for mileage so the only real way would be to find a truck, test drive it, and then hand figure the mileage it was getting. With mine I get about 18mpg unloaded highway on flat ground. Throw in some hills and a trailer and it drops down to 13mpg or a little less. I'm currently getting that right now for what i consider city driving on winter fuel. Some people can regularly keep it up in the high teens, others get 12-13mpg highway on a good day and down in the single digits towing.

well i have a stock'99 7.3 turbo in a duallie dump truck and i get 13-14 m.p.g. in it...but it weighs alot more than a pick-up so i would think you would have better mileage...but with diesel fuel reaching prices of 2.45$ (around here anyway)......theres always a trade off...but if you want all out tourque a diesel is second to none.. i love mine...zap!

For me, 17-18 country road drivin unloaded, drops to 13-14 towin a five ton trailer, and 18-20 highway. one time max of 23. I have found my sweet spot to be a tic above 2000rpms.

I've only run two tanks so far, but I'm getting 15.5 on a '05 6.0L 4x4 Crew Cab. By the way, the computer lies like a politician. The first tank reported 14.4 and the second tank reported 16.8. Both tanks hand-calculated out at 15.5 and 15.7 respectively.

It's not jsut fuel mileage to consider. It's regular maintenance is a lot more than a gas job. I drive a gas engine because I only pull occasionally.

A diesel holds about 14 quarts of oil must be changed on a regular basis and the filter maintenance is critical issue (especially fuel filters) and cost a LOT more than the gas job too.

I used to have a couple fo tractor trailers and even though I'd like to have a diesel, at this point I cannot justify one even though I pull a large boat that's around 6,500 pounds and occassionally I've pulled my friends 26 foot Century.

You must consider all aspects. How about someone here tell about the maintenance and the intervals and the cost of maintence for a PSD. Someone who's had one for several years. I know they're the best and all of that, but just post the cost for an oil change with air and fuel filters, etc for allewisco so he knows the whole story. I think it will really even out the mileage issue.

To bring this back on topic. I am getting 15-16city, 19-21 highway. My truck is a 2000 F350 RC,LWB, auto, 4x4, on winter fuel and about #1000 in the bed for traction weight.

sandtiger.........your location should say living in a van down by the river!!
Just kidding.
You make some valid arguments, but being able to pull my 36' camper or my 8k lb work trailer at 70 mph with the cruise set, in OD, offsets the extra expenses to me. Being able to pull in comfort is the best. I fought all the time with my F-150 pulling nothing more than a 16' open car trialer with one of my mustangs on it, and i would get a whopping 7mpg!!
Anyways enough of my ranting.....
i get about 18 empty on the highway and 14 empty around town that drops to 10-12 when pulling one of the bigger trailers and i get about 16 pulling the cars around.
the thing with a diesel id the RPM makes aHUGE diff. in the milage. the diff between 2000, and 2300 rpm is quite noticable in the mileage.
All depends on how much you tow with it to me. If you tow a lot it offsets the cost if you rarely tow i wouldn't spend the extra money just to have a diesel!
