2000 5.4 or V-10?
My dad's thinking of getting a 2000 F250SD, reg cab long box XLT 4x4 with the 5.4 engine and automatic transmission. It has 900 miles on it and the dealer wants $23,000. How does the 5.4's gas mileage compare to the V-10's? I've heard of V-10's getting only 12 mpg. How does the 5.4 compare in towing? This truck will probably tow farm trailers, a Spray-coupe sprayer, and other things, although it'll spend most of its time without a trailer. Is the piston slap a concern with 2000 model engines? Is $23,000 reasonable for this truck? Thanks...
Sound about right for 4X4 reg cab on the price. My XLT Super Cab was 26K. I went 5.4L and was suprised at the pep this thing has with the new 260 HP 5.4L and I have a 4X2 with towiing package and 3.73 rear end but I also have the super cab so we are probably talking about the same weight. I weighed mine with a full tank of gas and it was 5420 pound. My F150 4X4 Lariat SC with a 4.6L and fiberglass tonnoue was 5340. This F250 5.4L has way more get up and go. I only tow around 4500 pounds but it seems to do well. If you are down there then OK but the V10 if over that would be cheap insurance. Too early to tell on gas mileage but my first tank was almost 14 and it was cheap Exxon and I only have 500 miles on it as we speak. Hey, see if they will let your Dad use it for a weekend and try towing something. That's what I did before I bought it.

The V10 will probably tow better than the 5.4L. But for the relatively short distances you tend to tow farm trailers, you'll be just fine..
Your mileage will probably only be in the 13's or 14's. And when towing, the V10 will get better mpg than the 5.4L.
Piston slap is not an issue with Y2K 5.4L's. Your price sounds about right, might be slightly high, but resale is high on these trucks in general.

Price sounds too high. I got my 2000 250 XLT Crew Cab Long Bed 4x2 V-10 for $26k. This was ordered and bought new...not used.
ADDED ON EDIT: Also, I would go with the V-10. For $600 more you get more power and the thought of knowing in the back of your mind, when people see your truck, they are saying to themselves "Wow! A V-10!" Gas mileage between the two aren't a whole lot different...maybe 1-2MPG if that. The V-8 has to work harder to pull the weight of the truck. Besides, you can slap a Superchip in and get even more power AND get the SAME gas mileage as a stock V-8!

The price sounds really good to me, especially if it is new and non-titled. The invoice for a F250 4x4 Reg cab w/auto and no options is $24,130. And surely it has options, although I have seen them on the lot without any.
Hey T Bird, I got 13.8 MPG on my first documentable tank of gas in my 5.4L super cab. That was mixed driveng with one mountain trip and 500+ on the Odometer.
