SuperDuty V8s and oil consumption

I am not yet a Ford owner but I have a question, if you don't mind. I am considering purchasing a 2000 F250 SuperDuty. Have given consideration to the PSD and the V8. I really do not do any serious towing so the V8 should be adequate. I have read from time to time quite a bit about the Ford V8 consuming oil between oil changes. I have owned GMCs and Chevys for the past 15 years and have never put oil in any of the motors between oil changes prior to 180k miles. If I but the V8, can I expect the same with the Ford V8 or does it normally use oil between oil changes?
Thanks
Rick

Rick,
I have a 99 SD with the V8 and I have never had to add any oil. I am like you, this was my first Ford. (Family is all Chevy so I catch hell)But anyway, I haven't noticed it burning any more oil than my 97'Z71. I think I talked to you in the Diesel site about finding a South Texas lease and I was wondering if you have had any luck? Anyway, the oil is not a problem and you will enjoy the SD, it is a great truck.

No, we went to Three Rivers this past weekend to look at a lease. Apparently the deer had gone "stealth". Great looking property but never saw a deer or any signs of deer being there. Of course the land owner was hyping the land and how good it was. Sorry, not for me.

Supposed to go this weekend to look at property between Bracketville and Eagle Pass. Sure hope it turns out. I have got to commit on my Webb county lease by July 15th. If the one this weekend does not turn out, guess I will get back on in Webb.

Man am I have a hard time making a decision about the new truck. Diesel or gas and do I really do what I said I would never do again and buy a Ford. Guess getting burned twice and Ford buying one back makes me nervous about buying this truck.

Thanks again
Rick

Rick,

I have the V-8 and no problems so far with oil usage.

If you don't want to add oil between changes, don't go with the diesel, it will burn it, just the nature of the beast. Ask on the ford-diesel web site about oil useage with the diesel, or check their archives, I know I remember seeing it discussed there before.

Doug.

Thanks Doug,
Yep, I have heard that the Diesels require oil between changes. But, I had also heard that Ford says it is normal consumption for oil between oil changes with the gasoline motors. Have never contacted Ford about that and I probably should. I guess I am spoiled because I just have never had a GM product that required me to put oil in it, at least until it had lots of miles on it.

I had a Dodge many, many years ago that had a problem and Dodge said it was normal. Well, they finally fixed it. I took it out on the highway and basically blew the compression rings off and then took it back to them. Sat there in the service department smoking up the place and they said, we will fix it. Only had 10k miles on it. After they rebuilt it, I put 150k more miles on it and never once had to put oil in between oil changes.
Thanks again
Rick

I have a '97 ld 5.4 mobil I 5-30--change the filter at 5k and another oil/filter change at 10k. oil is full at the filter or oil/filter change. The truck has 12.3k miles on it. I didn't say that very well--sorry. Oil change/filter every 10k with a filter change in the middle (@5k), with top off. Oil is still full before filter change.

Just changed my oil (put in Mobil 1)...
Back to the subject of this thread...
My oil was "full" before the change and it's to the same "full" point after the change. I guess that means it didn't burn any...
