5.4 vs. 6.8

Looking for some feedback about both the 5.4 and the 6.8 v10. I really only need the v8 but I've heard the gas mileage is no worse (or maybe better) with the v10. I'm looking to order an 04 f-250 CC 6 3/4' 4x4 in the next month or so.
Let me know what you guys think.

TIA

I have driven the 5.4 in a reg cab... andf it was more than powerful.

If you are considering a crew cab with 4x4, maybe the V10 may be more appropriate (given the additonal body weight)

I would definitely go with the V10 in the crew cab, especially if you have the slightest chance of ever doing much towing. My mileage with the 6.8 is hovering around 12.5-13 mpg in mixed city/highway driving. I didn't do much better than that with my supercab 5.4, and have much more power on tap should I need it.

Here's my simple opinion:

If you want a 6-speed manual get the 5.4L with 4.10 gears. Fun to drive and great torque in 1 thru 3.

If you want an auto and do any towing at all get the V10.

I couldn't agree more.
my V10 gets 12 mpg (8 mpg towing 10K pounds)
my old 5.4 got 14 (8.5 towing)

I've got a 2002 CC 8' bed 4x4 3.73ls V-8. I get on average about 12.5 mpg. If your ordering I'd get the V-10. When I got mine, the V-10's were really hard to find. The Mileage on a V-10 should be about the same, with a lot of extra power when you need it. Don't get me wrong the V-8 is fine, but the V-10 is only about $500 more.

I have a 2000 F150 XLT 4x4 ORP, supercab, 8' bed, 3.55 ratio, 5.4 V8, automatic
My Dad has a 2002 F350 XLT 4x4, supercab, 8' bed 3.73 ratio, 6.8 V10, automatic

I get ~14MPG, Dad gets around ~13 MPG
and his truck ~1000lbs more!
The V10 is awesome - it has soooooo much more power than the V8!

Spend the $500 and get the V10
