Mach, mine was born in the second week of Jan.

I had not had any real problems until I went on this trip last week; I went about 1500 miles round trip towing 8K.

Problems:

The fuel gauge does not go to full when I fill the truck up.
When the truck is cold, I get a mild case of the romps.
I ONLY GOT 8 MPG AVERAGE FOR THIS TRIP!!!!! (even the service guy said I should get 11-14 with my load)
You have to push down on the accelerator about 1 1/2" before you get any response.

It's at the dealership now and they're doing all the updates. I think most of my problems should be resolved with these updates and there was a recall on the pedal assy. so that should fix that too.

Ya, its kinda B.S. to have to deal with this stuff, but this is still my favorite vehicle I've ever had hands down.

OUCH!! That's right up there with my V10 and 8K through the Ozark mountains - 7.5mpg. Hopefully they get that resolved for you since the increased towing mpg is supposed to be one of the big plusses for the PSD.

Bikenut, they are excellent trucks and engines!!!!

Did you smell the oil to see if you have the fuel oil dilution in the crankcase???

Did you actually get that kind of mileage or was the indicator off..(fill it up and hand calc it)...

The Jan. born date is right on the line...Since then they have done wonders with them, If I was to buy, I would in the next couple months...They are almost there...

The pedal problems could be a simple adjust on the fly-by-wire sensor adjust...Maybe no bigge...

Hang in there they will make it right one way or another...

P.S. my wife would love to have one!!!!

Thumbs up What should you do Diesel or V10

Go with the diesel. I sell the Fords, and V10 should NOT be a consideration due to gas consumption. The V10 should only be a commercial vehicle for that very reason. It does a great job but it is not for the average Joe. It was designed to work.
The new 6.0L diesel is the one! I just put 6000 miles on a F250 Crew 4x and let me tell you about it. QUIET! QUICK! NO (or hardly any) diesel exhaust odor! SMOOTH SHIFTING! And I got 18 miles per gallon right from 0 miles. I know it will get better. Yeh, it costs more, but it has a 100,000 mile warranty and you will get the return on your money just from the mileage you get when running empty. DO NOT GET A F350, unless you are going to tow the trailer alot and then only if you want a duallie (DRW) for better stability. The F350 does NOT tow more than a F250. You wont be happy with the 5.4L V8 when towing in the hills, so dont disappoint your self. Get the right truck the first time.

BCA, you seem to know all about the SuperDuties.

I would really appreciate if you could please tell me/us what, exactly, are all the differences between the 250 and 350 SRW?

Thanks!

The spring rates, and load capacities, because of the differences in their respectable weights...same engine, trans, diff..

Dang right it was designed to work-it's a Ford! I can't afford the extra $6 grand off the bat for the Powerstroke and I'm not the average Joe so I guess I'm in the right Superduty!

Looky:

I drive it about 1100 miles/month. 87 octane here now costs $1.42. I average 11.5mpg so I spend about $140 a month on gas. Sometimes I get as much as 14mpg if I keep it on the highway.

Diesel here costs $1.57 right now at the same station. If I managed 18mpg with a new 6.0L I'd spend about $97 a month on fuel for it.

So I'd save myself a whopping $43 bucks a month on fuel expenses. Not even factoring in the extra $$ the finance charge on the $4500 extra the diesel costs over the V10 it would take me almost 9 years to recoup the extra expense for the diesel.

Of course I'm assuming the difference in the price of diesel and gas will stay fairly close as it has for the past few years. Some areas have cheaper diesel but not here. Some guys drive alot more/less each month etc. So what I'm saying is you can't make a blanket statement about what engine is best for everbody.

V-10

I just bought a '00 F-250 XLT Crew Cab 4x4 with the V-10 and auto trans. This truck only has 30k on it and I average better than 13mpg! I took a short trip (160 miles) from VA- over the mountains into NC- no highway miles- and used 11.4 gallons. 14mpg!

The decision was clear to me when looking at prices of new vs used and V-10 vs 6L or 7.3L. I will only pull 8-10 times a year with this truck, so I will suffer for that mileage. As stated before it will take 8-10 years to make up the added $4500.

There are other issues to consider like the higher maintenance costs with a diesel- not limited to oil changes. Doesn't ford require like a $100 fee per warranty visit after 36k miles on a Diesel? I know they used too. I can also find gas on every steet corner- I don't have to go to the local truck stop to get fuel.

Don't get me wrong- if I were made of money- I would get the 6L (after resolving the recall issues). The V-10 is a good compromise!!

Just my $.02

We've been through this over and over but...

The extra initial cost of the PSD will be almost completely recovered at resale so it does not actually take any time to start recovering that cost. GENERALLY, diesel is cheaper than gasoline and if you tow fat loads you should be using premium anyway so the difference is even bigger (Here around town I get diesel for $1.51 and regular is $1.87 -add about .20 cent for premium) On the open road, Diesel is in the low $1.3X per gallon.

This is the middle of 2003; Diesel is very readily available.

If not towing, the PSD will get 18-21 highway. Towing 8000# the PSD will get 11-14!

Please, SPECIFICALLY tell me what higher maintainance costs there are on the PSD over gasser?

the PSD COMES with 100K warranty. That would cost an easy $800 for the gasser so there again the gap in cost is closer.

The life expectancy of the PSD compared to any gasser!?!?
~ I'll ask again: would you buy a gas powered truck with 100,000 miles on it and expect to reasonably get another 100,000? I think not.

Im sorry but the 10 is a great motor, but really cant be compared to a PSD. And yes, they're all Fords and we are all very lucky to have such great machines

We've been through this over and over but...

15 quart oil changes, more expensive oil filters and fuel filters and air filters, just for starters. One more thing for informational purposes only:

Ford part number search for F7TZ-12K073-A,

Electrical - Powertrain control - Camshaft position sensor
CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR, E150-350, 7.3L DI Diesel 1997 - 2003
List 177.78, Price 145.78.

Long life Air Filters, Longer mileage oil changes and I dont need any sensors. The Fuel filter change interval is 15K, I think I can swing it

Price a cps on any vehicle. they aint cheap. Mine aint broke. Besides, I got 100K worth of warranty.

So, you never answered, why did you get ride of the Diesel and go to the 150???

I lost my CMP, sensor, Int part number..$89... I change oil in the diesel at 5K, I use syn in the 150..oil filter costs the same..filters cost the same..

It does cost a little more to do maint on the diesel...

Diesel fuel $1.32, regular $1.29...heres the killer--Propane $.95 gal...

Dont get the diesel unless you can use it, opt for the 10...

I drive 3000 miles a month and tow at least 4-5 times a month..

Now with that said, I dont want to get in trouble again, there is no comparision between the 400hp I get out of the diesel to the 150 or a 10...

Base your decision on what works for you, not someone else...

Am i going to get flamed again..
