Looking at buying a V10
Hey Guys,
I'm looking at trading my 97 F250 LD for a 99 250SD Lariat with the V10 in it. The truck is awesome looking, a dark purple color w/ silver tutone. I'm wondering what what your opinions are of the V10. The truck would basically be used as a daily driver but would also be pulling a 24 foot gooseneck stock trailer. As much as I'd love to get a diesel the funds just don't allow it. Anywho, if you guys could shout back with your thoughts I'd appreciate it.

I have only had mine a week and half. I traded my 97 150 for my 01 F-250 4x4 Longbed CC. I love it, huge, rides very nice, gas mileage so far is 12.5 MPG. My previous truck only 15-16 maybe 17 once in a great while so the gas mileage isn't an issue in my mind. This is a enough truck to do anything I could imagine. Now comes the tough part of finding the money to lift it and add some other niceties.
Get it you won't regret it.

I have an '02 V10 with about 17K miles on it, and have been very satisfied with it so far. It has met all of my expectations in terms of power, towing performance, etc. I occasionally tow a 27' TT (about 7K lbs loaded), and it pulls it with no problems whatsoever. Sure, the gas mileage takes a huge hit pulling that kind of load, but since it isn't an every day thing, and most of my driving didn't fit the pattern, I couldn't really justify the diesel cost. I think you will be happy with the V10, as long as you have realistic expectations of what it will and won't do - such as it WILL suck the gas down, and it WON'T get 36MPG while towing 10K lbs!
Get a 2000, instead of the 99! The 99's HP was rated at 275, and the '00 is rated at 310.
I have a 2000 4x4,ORP,SC,LB,V-10,Lariat etc. It has 55,000+ and running just awesome! I LOVE this truck. Seriously, DO consider the '00.

My dad has an 02 F350 4x4, V10, 3.73 rear end. I drive it fequently, and had to tow my car home after hitting a deer and totalling it. It tows awesome. Between trailer and car, I was probably towing 5000lb+, and couldn't hardly tell it was there. It has tons of torque avaible, and the tranny doesn't have to constantly shift to find it. My 00 F150 5.4 gets about 13-14, Dad's V10 get around 12. Makes me wish I had opted for the V10 instead, but I like the looks of the F150 better.

I have both a 1999 SD V-10 2wd Supercab and a 2000 V-10 4wd Crewcab. I understand that the 2000 is supposed to have more horsepower, but the 1999 will run and hide from the 2000. The 1999 gets respectable mileage on the highway; about 15 mpg. The 2000 4wd is noticably harder on gas. The 1999 has 98000 miles and runs like the day I got it. I last used it to tow a 10,000 pound boat from South Carolina to Los Angeles and it performed flawlessly. I'd have no hesitation in recommending the 1999 you're looking at. FYI, in "around town driving" the 4wd gets about 10. The ride of the crewcab, with its long wheelbase, is quite a bit better than the supercab. If you tow a boat, however, the Crewcab really is a handful at the launch ramp. I'm pretty good with a trailer, but the turning radius is so long that the trailer takes a long time to respond.
V10...
My 2003 V10 F250 I bought last fall is the first truck I've ever owned that never needs to downshift out of OD to maintain it's speed up any interstate hill around here in West Virginia. I'm talking about speeds of 60 to 70 mph and not towing or hauling anything of course except a passenger or two. It just chugs along at 70 mph at about 1900rpms.
If I have it loaded of course it does downshift some but doesn't struggle. I'm not towing anything very heavy-only up to about 4500lbs so far. My winter mileage has been hovering around 10 but last fall before the weather got crappy I was getting 11.5 pretty consistantly. On a few highway trips I managed to hit 13 by taking it easy and using cruise control. By most accounts, the 6.8 V10 is getting about the same mpg as GM's smaller 6.0L and the new Dodge Hemi 5.7L and slightly better than the GM 8.1L or Dodge 8.0L V10.
Overall, I think it's the best gas pickup engine out there for 3/4 or 1 ton pickups. It's not the most powerful, but it makes about the most torque per cc and gets decent mileage. Also make it's peak power at low rpms unlike the Hemi 5.7 or the Chevy 6.0L.
On the fun side, I like the low rumble you can feel through the floor when you accelerate up to highway speeds and the V10 badge on the fender gets alot of attention from other truck owners. I guess it's the novelty of seeing a 10 cylinder-equipped truck! If you buy it, you won't be dissappointed.
