Roush. Is it worth it?

Hey! I'm just wondering if anyone has had their truck sent off to Roush to have one of their kits installed and if so, if it's worth the money... Just curious is all

I was looking at a 99' Roush Expedition before I purchased my Navigator. It was nice, but most of what Roush does is superficial. They put a lowering kit on it, a front bumper cover, some emblems, wheels and tires, floor mats and then charge you an arm and a leg. It can be easily duplicated for much less, but you wouldn't have the Roush name plate. I guess it all depends on the price the dealer is charging for this as to what it's worth to you. To me, building my own would be more fun and probably cost less.

Navi Man is right. The kit is a ridiculous price, and half the fun of building a project vehicle is building it yourself. You can install the kit yourself and save some $$$, no special tools are required. But IMO you can get much nicer products on your own and you can pick and choose whatever you feel is best. If you want the Roush tag you can still put them on. There are many interior options available too. BTW, most of the exterior parts you can get individually on the internet and for much less that Roush or a local Ford dealer will sell for.

Roush Expy? I'd buy a used one-

I met a guy that bought a 1999 Roush Expy, Black with grey fender trim, loaded- to include VCR Entertainment center, supercharger, 18" wheels, etc. He paid $21,000, that was out the door, TT& L and taxes.

At times you will find a loaded 1999 Eddie Bauer for $17,000 -21,000, so that tells you what that Roush kit is worth.

From a styling stand point, it looks good when you get it, and you don't have to invest any additional cash to make it look good. Which is a good thing. You have some exclusivity, but no guarantee. You'll feel good until someone rolls up next to you with one just like yours! That's all but impossible for someone to do when you personalize it yourself.

If you're buying a used one and getting a good deal, I'd say go for it. New- I'd think long & hard about that- especially with the way the current gen Expy's are going to depreciate with the new 2003 body style hitting the streets. 2002 Expy's are gonna be sold at closeout prices, which mean they are gonna lose big in the blue book & NADA. That's bad for someone like me, who likes to buy a new car every 2-3 years. I've had this one 18 months!

Middlekauf Ford in Plano, TX used to sell Roush F-150 flaresides- I think Bankston Ford in Frisco, TX sold the Roush Expeditions. The F-150 was $39,000- If memory serves, the Expy was $46,000, about $12,000 over base price.

Aside from a lowering kit, ground effects, 18" wheels, dual exhaust & the Roush badges, there was no real difference. Nothing that you couldn't duplicate or surpass on the aftermarket for less than $5,000 over sticker for a regular F-150. $7,000 if you want a supercharger.

Neither dealership sells the Roush's anymore. Middlekauf has Saleen's now. Anyhoo, if you caught them at the right time, they would slice $10,000 of the price of those Roush's.

I'd think about that one- but, as long as you're happy- that's all that really matters.....

Another thing to consider is that, from what I was told, the dealer is the one that does the installation. Basically Roush sells the kit to the dealer and license the dealer to build an Expy as a Roush. I agree with Bighersh, if it's a nice used one at a good price, then it may be worth it. I would still go with the personal touch of designing one yourself. You can be the general contractor and decide what you want to have installed, and then sub out the work for the installation. I'm sure their are customizing shops in your area that would be very negotiable on price. You can get some pretty good deals through some of the mail order outfits in Truck'n Magazine. Good luck on whatever you choose and be sure to keep us posted.

Ok, guys thanks for the advice and info. Makes a lot of sense to just do it yourself and not pay the extra $$$ just for the name. I bought a 2002 back in Feb so I'm thinking I should make up for the extra money paid on the total price and go the better, budget route for customizing... I've found lots of cool mods and upgrades that I'm sure I could do for a lot cheaper than having a dealer or someone like Roush do. I will definetly keep everyone up to date on my upgrades... thanks!

Thumbs down Roush Expedition

I have a 2001 Roush and I do not recommend Roush to anybody. First of all, you can get their mods done for considerably less than they charge. Secondly, but possibly more important, their customer service SUCKS! They lied to me repeatedly about delivery dates which cost me a whole lot more than they were willing to compensate me for. To try to make up for the lies, they threw on some modifications that without asking me beforehand, These were things that I didn't order for a reason. One of them was their overpriced front bumper cover which has paint chipping which they will not repair. My dealer, who had been very patient through this process got lied to, repeatedly.
