Can't do a Helium Fill anymore
One of my friends used to work for UPS and for a while, Tire Rack or one of those companies was filling all of their wheel/tire combinations with Helium before shipping to try to save on the shipping costs. I think there was even a story on Nightline about it. So, it wouldn't have been possible for Steven to use Helium. I did, however, hear that if you use purified air, the wheel/tire combo will come in a bit lighter on the scales. Had you heard about this Steven?

This is the funniest thread I've ever read. You guys crack me up. I like the one about filling your tank up then checking the mileage. If you speedo read is off, why would anyone think that the mileage read isn't? Thanks so much for the laugh. BTW I was just joking about the air thing. I sure hope nobody is taking that seriously.

im glad everyone is having fun with this. i too hope everyone knows i was joking about the whole air in the tires thing.
i was exxagerating a bit before about the weight of the tires.
the reason i thought my mileage was right is because i mismeasured the tires/wheel combo and thought they were almost the same. within a half an inch. dont know how i did it but i messed up.
i tried one of those internet wheel tire size charts and it showed i am 7.3% off.
thanks for all the help and for all the good humor sarcasm.

No, seriously, the Helium thing works. I even heard people even used to put helium in their spare tire to help take some of the weight off of the rear of the truck so that their tires would last longer, especially when towing heavy loads. Do a search about "Helium" under the Lightning threads. A few of those guys used to use Helium in their front tires to help them pull wheelies when they run the quarter at the track. They used Helium in the front of that Mopar on Fast and Furious to pull that sky scraper wheelie too!

Hey NHMCGILL
My point in my post was that there is no way he could get 21 mpg.
Filling the tank with gas and driving for awhile (approx. 200 miles) will give you a pretty accurate mpg and is really the best way to do it. If you have different size tires than factory, then common sense tells you that you need to make the adjustment accordingly. It wasn't worth my time to explain the whole tire height thing to him. The difference in tire size (turns out it was 7.3%) will only change the mpg less than 1 mpg anyway, and wouldn't compensate for the mpg reading he thought he was getting. I'm glad you got a laugh out of it, but try and read the post a little less cynical next time. The MPG computer on a Navigator isn't very accurate and this was what he was basing it on.
Just out of curiousity, what is your method for checking the mpg?
