Ignition Coil and Plug Replacement....What Brand to Get?
Ignition Coil and Plug Replacement....What Brand to Get?
Hey all,
When I get the Check Engine problem taken care of my next project is to replace all the coil packs and plugs. I am kinda confident that I can do this project but the 2 that are close to the firewall looks like it might be trouble for me to get to.
About 10K miles ago I had a Check Engine light and it turned out that there was a problem with one of the cylinders and needed a coil replacement. The car wouldn't hardly idle and it took everything I could do to get it to Advance to have the codes checked and get back home. A family friend took care of it for me.
It ran fine for a while without any misses or problems and then I noticed that every now and again I'll get a miss when accelerating. It doesn't last long and will go away, but it makes me very leery of going out on a long trip or anything like that.
So, I figure with 105K miles, I need to replace the plugs and the coil packs.
I'd like to know what coil packs I can use though. The FORD parts are about $70 each or about $600! I have seen others that can be bought for $75 for the entire set. Now I don't know anything about these parts and what would be satisfactory to use. I will say that the FORD parts would likely have to be replaced in piece meal, 1 or maybe 2 at a time until I got all of them done. I'd rather get them all done at once and not have to worry about them any longer.
So...can you all tell me what brand of Ignition Coils would be OK for me to use on this Expedition? If there is a brand that will work as well as the FORD part, but for a lot less money, I would like to know what it is.
Thank you for your time and help.

Motorcraft SP479 plugs, torqued to 28 ft/lb with NO antiseize, $2.78 each at rockauto.com.
Motorcraft DG508 coils preferred, $42.79 each at rockauto.com.
If you want to take a chance on cheap coils, the only vendor I trust is "Araparts".

10 bucks cheaper at Amazon.

Thanks for the advice.
The other day when I was getting the PCV Rubber parts for my repair that I posted about in my other thread, I had the guy give me an estimate on coil packs and plugs. This was at O'reilly's. I can't remember the brand of the coil, maybe MOTORCRAFT, but not at all sure. They were about $49 each, I do remember that though.
So, you telling me that I can get a set of 8, that you have confidence in, makes me really happy!!

Ignition Coil Replacement....How Difficult is this Job for a NOVICE?
Hey all,
I would like to get your thoughts and advice on this repair. I have 105K on my car and every now and again I'll get a miss. It usually happens when I have been driving it for 30 minutes or so and sometimes in stop and go traffic. It's not a bad miss or anything like that, but it is there and noticeable. I have been told that since I have that many miles, it would be a good idea to go ahead and replace the plugs and the coils on each plug to eliminate that possible problem in the future. Right now I would not feel safe or comfortable in taking this vehicle on a long trip. I can't have a vehicle like this so I have pretty much decided that I am going to replace these plugs and coils in the coming month or 2, prolly after the new year.
Anyway, I am NOT at all good with car motors and have never done very much work on any engine. I have watched a couple of YouTube videos on changing the plugs and coils and last night when I was finished with the repair I had to do with the PCV rubber elbows, I looked at the plug and coil locations and wondered about whether it would be something over my head or not. I think my main problem would be getting to the parts to get them out and put them back in. The area is a cramped one and I am not at all used to this kinda stuff.
The ones that really concern me are the 2 that are closest to the firewall. I am fairly confident that I can get the first 6, but the last 2 give me doubts. Maybe I can get those 6 done and see if I can get a family friend to come and do the last 2.
How hard is this repair? Do you think it could be done by a novice like me or is it better left to a shop?
I'd like to hear your thoughts and ideas. Any advice you have would be welcomed.
Thanks for your time.

O'Reilly wants 67 bucks for Motorcraft coils. Even their house brand coils are 46 bucks. They also want $3.59 for Motorcraft plugs. Order your parts online.
