Hey guys i have started looking for a 97-02 expy for the wife and i have found plenty of them around my area but they have extremly high miles.. Any where from 200k to 300k. I have found some very nice ones that look like they just rolled off the show room floor but these miles are scaring me. My price range isnt the highest but looking to spend 3500 or less. Are these reliable year models? I have my 03 f150 and it has been a great truck and i would think the expys would be the same as the f150...

Also i see some models with air suspension and some dont have them.. Is the air ride for the nicer models or was it a option?

For those of you that have this year expy with higher mileage let me know how it has treated you and what kind of work you have done on it..

I have a 99 EB with the 4.6L engine and NON air bag rear. Truck has 220ish kms on it. All regular maint. etc. the 2003 SCREW you have is essentially an expedition anyway. Get an expo with the same 5.4l engine you have and they can share parts.

Oh also for the air bag in the rear models. To my knowledge it was an option that usually cam with a tow package and the bigger fuel tank. They are nice to have but when they fail it can be a pain to fix dependign on what fails. If its just the bag its super easy.

 

thanks for the reply... Wonder how much difference there is on fuel mileage between the 4.6 and 5.4? The wife avg's 400 to 500 miles a week. I know all to well on the air suspension had a 96 lincoln towncar and it was a headache, right now have a 96 Lincoln Mark VIII and so far everything works the way it should.

I found a 00 Expy in dallas and man it looked like it was a 30,000 mile vehicle paint was sharp no scratches dings etc. The leather looked brand new on the inside and it had 296,000 miles on it .

 

I also have a '99 Expy with the 4.6. It's not the most powerful, but it's never really left me needing more. The Expeditions got the PI heads before the F-150s, so a '99 will perform as good or better than a F-150 of that year.

Mine has 244,000 miles, I bought it with 202,000. The only real problems I've had with it are:

EGR passages were completely clogged when I got it. Heaven knows how long the Check Engine light was on before I got it.

Transmission failed at 220,000 miles. It cost me $1600 out the door for a rebuild. I have the base (XLT, 2WD), and it doesn't even have a transmission cooler, just the loop in the radiator. I beat the snot out of it and tow, so I felt OK about that.

Rear wiper motor failed.

The front heater core was plugged - I back-flushed it and it's working fine.

Tires, brakes, rear-end seals, plugs, wires, headlight bulbs, just maintenance stuff.

The ball joints and tie rod ends are the originals. I've had it inspected the last 2 years, because it creaks in the winter. My mechanic tells me, "they're worn, but not worn out. If it was me, I'd wait another year." The radiator hoses, water pump and alternator are original. Air blows cold, windows go up and down, radio works. I couldn't ask for a better ride.

 

For milage with my 4.6 I get around 600ish kms to a tank. More if i baby it. So around 370-380 miles. Also I have the smaller 98 liter tank (26 gal)

 

I have had a 98 with 5.4 for 3 years now had 188k on it when i got it and has 220k on it now, regular mantinance and a coil/plug swap when one that has never been swapped before, i have had many kinds of vehicles before this one and this is my favorite so far

 

oh and age is always a issue with the rear air bags failing, but there is a company that sells a spring swap for them for cheap if it has any issues

 

well if you buy one up this way give me a shout i can meet up with you and look over it with you if you'd like.

The only real big difference between the expy and the F150 is the trans, the expy got the 4R100 instead of the 4R70w

 

Pat= What is the diff in the trannys? I worry about mine all the time lol Mainly when going riding a nd pulling my 16 ft trailer with my polaris ranger on it and sometime another 4wheeler, but it never misses a lick

 

My 2001 Expedition had 111600 when I bout it 11-2008, it now has 175000. The wife drives drives it on a 60 mile round trip commute 3 or 4 days a week. Other than normal itms, no major issues so far. With the 5.4, exhaust, and Firestone ATs, it was averaging about 14-15. With the Kellys is down to around 13.5-14. The air suspension was an option on XLT, and Eddie Bauer. Seen mostly on EBS. There were a couple of drive trains available 2wd, AWD with a 4H/ 4L switch, part time 4wd, and part time 4wd with 2H, AWD, 4H, and 4L. As far trannies they had either the 4R100 or 4R70 depending on drivetrain. I believe all of the unts with AWD had the 4R100. Not sure about the 4WD mdels. Most 2wds were 4R70s. The 4R100 is stout, same unit originally used in the powerstroke. All the 4wds have a 30 gallon tank. Oh yeah I saw a very slight increase in mileage with the Edge Evo.

 

the expy trans is heavier duty because its a heavier truck then the F150s

I might just take you up on that ... I usually buy all my vehicles in the dfw area since the prices are alot more reasonable..probaly wont be for another month or two though.

Thanks for all the info. Had no idea these year expys had AWD. Do yal really think there will be much of a difference with fuel mileage between the 4.6 and 5.4? Im finding about 90 percent of the expy's for sale has the 5.4. I doubt we will get a 4wd unless its just too good of a deal to pass up... it may ice here twice a year and rain maybe 4 times a year so i dont really need 4wd and i know the gas mileage will be lower also.

 

Make sure the 3rd row seat is still in them. Pretty common for people to remove them for more cargo room, and I think the seat was optional too.
