Add a key 2001 Expediiton

I want to add a key but only have one key, when I googled it what I have found saysI need two working keys to do this.

Does the chip key have an identifyer where I can't just insert the same key twice and trick the system? I'm trying to avoid the stealership.

Thanks,

with chipped keys they have to be programmed and that might be a dealer only thing idk.

you can get a copy cut of your chipped key but it wont start the truck just open the doors

In order of preference:

Go to dealer or locksmith for a duplicate physical cut and then program it into the system. With two working (different keys), you can program your own into the PATS system yourself. $100 or more.

Find a locksmith who can clone your current key. A cloned key cannot be used with its original to program more keys into the system. $50-75

Have several common keys cut for your locks and ignition cylinder, then mount the working PATS key inside the PATS antenna ring (remove ring from cylinder first). Use regular keys for day to day use. Never disclose what you've done since here is a working key concealed inside the dash (unless you cut off the teeth...) $2 each.

Stealer wants $80 bucks, the company that cut my key for my Cadillac which has a chip wants $70, most locksmiths want 70 except two that want 85

Thanks for the info, however Projectsho89 you have lost me. I only have one key and from what i am told need the second key programmed in before i can program additional keys.

One other question, to get the additional keys made, do I just go to any locksmith

should answer any questions you have. You are pretty much screwed for at least $50 no matter how you look at the matter.

is the $70-80 charge you are being quoted for labor alone?

or

is that for programming + a new key?

if just labor alone, walk out. The programming takes maybe 5 minutes. Any Ford Dealership can do this easily.

42.50 for programming, 27.50 for the key, This SUV was handed down from the original owners father who passed away to the son and they lost the original 2nd key and keypad code.

the local ford stealership wanted the rig for an hour where the locksmith said 20 minutes because it was the 2nd key, i have read up on how to do the 3rd key,

Projectsho89 I lost you, were you talking about doing this with a 2nd key or 3rd key?

no reason to drop a bunch of cash for a key. I've been using the knock-off keys for years without any any issues

Go back in to the programming mode and have all the keys and remotes on hand

After you enter the mode, click a button on each remote, wait for the signal it has been accepted and then press a button the next remote

You must program them all at the same time. The PCM is learning each remotes frequency

Refer back to the link I put up
