E-Fans?

It has probably been discussed to death on this site but, for my 2000 expedition, I'm starting a little project to see how good of fuel mileage i can get by making cheap and easy under the hood modifications. I'm looking at buying a single 16" e-fan to replace the mechanical one and i was wondering
1) Will ONE 16" fan be enough to keep me running cool or would i need to get a dual fan set up?

2) Is the cost of the e-fans worth it? What kind of mpg gains would i be expected to see from it?

Thanks

Brett

If you're going to do a singe fan, I'd get a Mark VIII fan. When I had it, it was enough to cool things down.

Not sure how different the 97-02 Exys are from the 03-06 ones, but for my 03, two 16" fans would not (even though they fit perfectly on an 04-08 F150). They were too wide. I think 2 14" fans would have fit. Again, not sure if it's the same for the OBS Expys.

you do e-fans for the performance gains...not necessarily the MPG gains.

without that mechanical clutch and fan connected, the motor will spin up faster and you regain a few HP/TQ without those parasitic losses.

will you gain some MPG? yes. enough to measure and make a significant improvement? IMO not really. maybe at most 1 mpg.

btw, I would only do a dual fan setup. you need some sort of backup/reliabilty feature.

most guys run a 2 fan setup with 2 seperate temperature triggers. 1 fan for low temps (about 150-170) and then the second fan to cut on under high loading (190+).

that way, even if 1 fan fails, you still have enough to get home. besides, it's a V-8, give it some cooling

Other info - there is a ton of e-fan discussion on this site, lol - just scratched the surface here ...

Thanks a lot guys. Im up in the air with all of this because from my point of view i could go 3 ways...just do nothing, spend no money and leave the truck the way it is, drop a hundred bucks or so and get 1 fan but not necessarily get the cooling i need or go all out and get 2 fans but have to spend 400+ bucks too...soo this idea will be swimmin around in my head for a while...thanks though

Why would you spend 400+ dollars for fans? Many here have been fine with ebay fans, or a single Mark VIII/Taurus fan.

The only other thing I have to say, mainly concerning one of the efan threads listed above, is the I used to run an efan. I took it out because the DC Controls fan controller crapped out a few weeks after the 3 month warranty was over. I was close to overheating once, then it just stayed constantly on. I remember that someone else bought a DC Controller at around the same time I did, and they, too, had problems with rusted terminal posts. Not sure if theirs crapped out as well.
