Gas Mileage - what are you getting and why?

I'm getting 15.5-16mpg consistently highway/city combined on 87 - 89 octane. I can get 17 mpg on the highway @ 93 octane all day. I have a 97 4x4, so it isn't all-time AWD, 3.73s, tow package, 3rd row seat, etc... so it's a heavy pig. See mods in sig.

I'm just interested as to what everyone else is getting and if there's anyone that's modded extreme just for mpg.

You could do a search, and get all the numbers that you want... My MPG is like a toddler on speed...all over the place.

9.5 to 11.5. Some of those 9.5s are due to winter gas. Some are due to be really hard on the go pedal. If I'm nice to it I see 11.5.

First tank...

...in my '08, and I got 16.0 - not too shabby to me... that's around town with a city street/freeway mixture... on 87 octane.

My secret for this is staying out of the pedal.

I learned with the SuperCrew to keep the tachometer under 2000 rpms if at all possible... I got 15 with it around town... so the Expy just got me an extra mile per gallon on the first tank.

About to take a trip in it to California (from Dallas area), so I'll be able to figure the highway average by the time we get back.

Mine's an '05 SCrew FX4 with the 5.4, 3.73s, tow package, stock 18" wheels. No mods. I've had it since early Jan and for the first 5k miles, I've averaged 16.1 mpg, with a high of 18.6 and a low of 13.2 (my lowest 4 have all come during tankfuls where I'm towing a 2-horse trailer).

My tankfuls tend to be 85-90% highway. I try to take it easy starting, brake slowly, and set the cruise control at 65. I think someone here once said it best: try to drive like there's an egg between your foot and the pedals.

still not changing the fact that a casual discussion is well within our rights. Smart remark pointing out the elephant in the room is just uncalled for.

BTW- Do you own an EXPY? I suppose one could fuss that you are miandering in the wrong area. I haven't heard it yet though.

Yes there are many other threads about it. They are in OTHER SECTIONS OF THIS FORUM. I see your point, and much to noone's surprise, we knew this already.

BUT, the question in the post was NOT, "Hey are there any other gas mileage threads", now was it.

Weird story.

For the last 1-2 months my 2000 Expedition 5.4-4x4 has been needing a thermostat.
Coolant temp has been about 150's-160's.
I have a Scan Gauge2.
My MPG around town has been over 14MPG.

So yesterday I changed the thermostat and went to work.
After work, i checked my Scan Gauge2 display,
it turned out my City MPG was 11.6.

So my gas mileage actually went down significantly just by changing the thermostat.

For the record, months ago, my city MPG was about 10.5-11.5

Has anyone else ever have a similar experience?

Possibly due to running the clutch fan more often?
