2004 Expy Strange Tranny Noise

Has anyone noticed if when stating the car and putting it in gear quick and hitting the gas causes it to make a GGGGRRRR-engage sound. Forward or reverse.
It doesn't happen all the time but only when you first start it after sitting a little bit.
Sometimes I wonder if I'm confusing it with the strange noise the airconditioner compressor makes when first engaging. (it's very similar)
Anyway, I mentioned it to the service manager and he said maybe the PCM needs to be updated.
Any thoughts??
