97 Exp 4x4 problem

I have a 97 expedition EB 4x4. Today I noticed my 4 wheel drive would not engage. First of all, my drive selector includes 2hi, AWD, 4hi, and 4lo.

The AWD light comes on when I move the selector to AWD, I don't know if it's actually engaged or not.

Moving the selector to 4hi results in absolutely nothing. No 4x4 light, no click, no clunk...nothing. Although, if it's in AWD, then moved to 4hi, the AWD light stays on instead of switching to 4x4 as normal.

Switching to 4Lo yields the same results. Nothing. I put it in Neutral, moved it to 4Lo, waited for a bit, no clunk, no light, nothing.

4wd hasn't been used in a few months, but was never abused or engaged at speed. The last time I needed it, everything worked fine.

Any ideas?

wow, not a word???

anyway, my money is on the switch at this point in time. I'll get a volt meter on it and post back if that's the problem.

My money is on the shift motor-bolted on the X-fer case.
Really!

Nothing will happen when you shift to AWD. This is the auto mode, will shift into 4X4 when tire slip is detected.

The shift motor looks like a huge PITA to replace, but I think you're right. Anyone got any tips on the easiest way to go about changing it? It looks as though I'll have to drop the crossmember and torsion bars just to get to it...
