97 Expedition 4wd problem
97 Expedition 4wd problem
hey guys, i'm having a problem with my 97 expedition, firsly, when i switch into a4wd or 4wdh i don't feel any change, nothing like the front hub locking in or anything, should i? Also, when i switch to 4wdh, the light on the dash will flicker back to a4wd every once in a while, no fixed timing, and without me doing anything...if it is in a4wd it never flickers
i bought this truck last year, had the problem last winter too, but this year going to the snow the same thing happened and i'm a little worried

no-one? well then i guess it's not a common problem with expeditions..ii checked it out last night and the 4wd is kicking in, so all that is wrong now is that the dash light keeps flickering back to a4wd every 2 mins or so for a second, then switches back to 4wd, it can do this 2 or 3 times in the spacew of 10 seconds or so then stop...i'm just wondering if it is only a short on the dash, or whether the truck is actually switching out of 4wd, i do a lot of snowboarding, so having this happen in some of the conditions i've been in is not a nice thing!!
I've had it happen on a two of my Ex's, one of which would sometimes stay in 4 low even when asked not to-and would later pop out with a bang!
The only clunk you should feel is in 4 low-when in neutral, stopped and going in/out of 4low.
The lights happen periodically with me, doesn't have an effect really on the system...I think!

Check the "Other Drivetrain" board. Lots of good info there about checking fuses, connectors, solenoids, etc. The fix could be easy, could be $$. Check the easy things first.

Moss,
I have that same problem on our 98 EB
As soon as you change the switch from A4WD to 4X4 the light will jump back and forth. It is worse in the snow for some reason. it also clicks under the dash in sinc with the light jumping back and forth. I posted something hear last year and I did not get a response. I thought it was a common problem then. I guess not...
Please let me know if you find out the cure

I just replied in your other thread in the "Other Drivetrain" forum.
I have always had the same thing on my '98 Expy. When in 4WDHI, it will occasionally click back/forth from 4HI to AWD. I too had posted about this quite a while ago and never got any response.
BTW, do any of you guys get a grinding-type/whining noise when in AWD or 4WDHI? It's not loud enough for me to think the front-end is about to fall apart, but there's no question that the truck is in 4WD when it's on. AWD seems to be a little more noisy but either one definitely has some type of noise to it on my truck.
