03 EB Expedition: which rear gears?

Just bought a 2003 5.4 EB Expedition. I noticed that the door does not tell me the towing capacity of this vehicle. I look in the owners manual and they have 2 numbers. One is like 8900# and the other is slightly less.

How can I tell what rear axle ratio this vehicle has? what the towing is?

I notice a secondary cooler on the vehicle. I know one is for the power steering pump (drvr side). Is the other (pass side) a trans cooler? My 98 Expedition did not have this...

The vehicle does have the towing package. Whatever that means on these 03's??

Sorry for all the questions but is 7000 lbs right for this vehicle? The darn stickers on the door says this vehicle wieghs 7000? That right? The only options I dont have are curtain air bags, air shocks, and the stability control thing.

Also, is 12.5 MPG city and 17 MPG Hwy about right?

No it doesn't weight 7,000 lbs . . .that is the gross veichal weight (witch seems a little low) it is the weight of the truck PLUS the payload capacity

Your mileage seems about right

I think that all the '03s have 3.55 or 3.73 gearing (3.31 is gone)

Someone more familiar with the '03 will come along soon and set us both straight.

I beleive the '03's all come with 3.73's and if I'm not mistaken, tow capacity is like 8300#.

Don't have one but that's what I've read. Maybe someone else that has one can add some good info?

'03 EB towing capacity

My '03 manual shows 8900 lb max for 2x4; 8699 lb for 4x4 with the 5.4L

Max tongue wt is 600 lb without weight distributing hitch; with a weight distributing hitch it is 885 lb.

Max gross combined weight rating (truck+load+trailer) is 14,500 for both 2x4 and 4x4.

Those numbers look like what I found.

I think I have a class IV ro V hitch integrated into the back of the vehicle. Not sure if its the high tongue weight or not. It has 2 trailer connectors (older style and newer).

Sure would like to know what these things weigh. My 98 was about 6000 with me and junk.

This 03 is SOOOO much nicer than the 98. It rides and handles MUCH better. Little more power, little better mileage. Many more nice to have gadgets.

It does not feel as peppy off the line (down low) as my 98 but if you step on it, it feels stronger. The 98 had 3.73's.

THUMBS UP!
