Question Starting Noise

I have noticed that when I first start my 2000 Navigator it sounds like a BIG truck..ie:dually, etc. Is this normal? Or could something be wrong?

The noise doesn't last, it's just the initial start of the engine....I would think it would be quiet...being a "luxury" model truck....so I am wondering if the big engine is just loud? Any ideas? Thoughts?

Thanks!

Is it a ticking sound or a grinding/buzzing sound? The latter sound is the air suspension compressor doing it's job. In the cold they can sound a little noisier. The ticking sound is the sound a cold engine can make before it gets sufficient oil to the top of the motor.

Actually it's a "diesel" like noise, not really a dually noise (my mistake).

It's not a lifter noise because it doesn't have any pushrods, and it's not a piston slap.

It just sounds like a dielsel for 1 second, then it's normal

Who said anything about lifters. The motor still has a valve train don't you agree? It sometimes takes awhile to get oil to the top of the valve train, hence the ticking or on severe cases a marbles in the can sound. If you do a search on the marbles sound you'll find that it is usually the result of the wrong oil filter being used. Some oil change shops and yes even some dealerships use the old FL1A filter. This is the wrong one. Use the search function and you will often find a wealth of info that has already been covered. Good luck and welcome to the board.

I know with my expi it will make a loud "blowing" noise. I think it's the fan. I'm not sure exactly why it does it, but after it warms up it will settle down and run quietly. I've heard my wifes 02 S-Crew with the 5.4 do it a couple times, and also my 96 S-10 did it.

To try to describe the sound, it does kinda sound like a big diesel engine when you wind up the rpm's minus the "clackety" sound it makes. I am curious as to why it does it if anyone has any input on that point.

Hmmm...

My noise is just during the initial vroom of the start up, then it's quiet as a sewing machine.

Pretty sure it's not the fan...

Being in Tampa you probably don't get much cold air. In the Dallas area we do, every other day and sometimes mine will make a lot of noise and get nice and quiet immedietly; generally when it's warmer. Other's the fan stay on for a few minutes and when I'm taking off it sounds like I should be yanking an air horn! It may be the fan. You may want to open the hood before you start it next time and have someone watch/listen, or maybe you'll be able to tell from the drivers seat. ??? I'm out of ideas....

its the timing chains in the 4 valve 5.4 that make the noise. Thats why all yall guys with reg 2 valve engines dont know what shes talking about. Navigirl, while not all of the 4 valve engines do it, a lot of them do, and its not anything to worry with if you can live with it.

BTW, i put a transmission in a 4 valve 2001 cobra yesterday. The car hadnt been cranked in over a week and it was real real loud for about a split second. Everyone in the shop looked, haha.

Hey there Jefflaws. I do believe the term "valve train" would include a 4 valve also, don't you agree. Then again all I was trying to do was help out the lady. It's nice when a upstanding person such as yourself trys to make himself look good by attempting to make others look bad. Then again you are a Ford tech so I do believe that's in your job description right!!!!!!

wow, you sure are a nice guy.

anyway, when i said the guys that start 2 valve engines cold dont what she was talking about, i meant that they dont hear it. Not that they literally dont know what they are talking about.

And the noise comes from behind the timing cover, down low on the engine, not up in the "valve train". Its a noise thats common to the 4 valve chains and guides, but not to the 2 valve ones.

a gun rack in the rear side window along with some mud flaps that say "back off", a CB antenna and oh yeah a brush guard for the front bumper and you can achieve red-neck status with out the body lift
