which mod for big *** sound

a few months ago i got a 3 inch magna flow cat back dumped on my truck and the sound is good. but its just too quiet. what mod or mods am i missing. dont hold back people i want to make brains rattle. oh and its a 94 f150 5.8. i need some desicive information...i dont want to drive out of the shop with next to the same sound. I want a big difference in sound from what ive got. just so you cant get an idea of what it sounds like now ill explain: when im idling i cant really hear it unless im outside within 10 feet of the truck. it only sets car alarms off when im directly next to the car. if i have music playing i can barely hear it at all. if windows are up and playing music its like im driving a golf cart. the other day i drove next to some guy with what looked like an old chevy muscle car. i stopped right next to him at the light and he just completely took over. I mean he was just idling next to me and i could feel my internal organs shifting. It was the most awsome thing ive heard. now i know this guys car engine could not have been as large as my 5.8 so what is holding me back. oh and im not getting rid of the magna flow... unless thats what holding me back.

have the cats gutted. Knock all the stuff in the cats out so you have straight pipe through there while keeping the stock cat appearance. Then get a free flowing muffler or short glasspacks

kb49,

I have a near identical truck as you. Mine is also a 94 with the 5.8. I had my exhaust redone about a month or two ago. I had both my pre heater and my cat taken off, and replaced by a single high flow cat. There is no need for a pre heater with the aftermarket cats. At least that is what the muffler man said. Where my preheater was I had a hi flow y-pipe put in. All this is 3 in. all the way back to where I have a flowmaster single 3"in/dual 2 1/4" out. I don't have any tail pipes and it sounds awesome. It's loud, but still has a nice sound to it, and trust me when I say I get a lot of compliments. People are always talking to me at stop lights or in parking lots.

kb49,

Yes, the only way you are going to get the kind of sound you are looking for is by messing with the catalytic converter. Either by replacing it with a high flow, or completely taking it off.

Replace the cat(s) with a high flow aftermarket cat(s). Then put short glasspacks on it. I gaurantee you it'll blow your ears off.

is my magna flow not good enough. why cant i stay with magna flow and get a high flowing cat. oh and i also wanted to mention that when i went to the shop i asked the guys at the front to give me the loudest setup he could think of. at the time i knew nothing so i just took his word for it. he told me to get a 3 in magna flow cat back dumped before the axle. i was surprised that this is all he recommended to me. i asked him if it would be louder if i put in some high flow cat. he told me that there would be little to no difference in sound. and that fords cats flow well enough. well i thought to myself that these guys are trying to make money so why would he not want to convince me to get cats. so i believed him. was he talking out of his ***? are these cats the only thing missing from this puzzle.

louder

hey there-

don't blow the cash (and its a lotta cash!) on high flow cats - you'll need four of 'em on a late model. Here's a bit more cost effective solution- Get the Flowmaster Y pipe- the amount of restriction and reversion that exists on your stock left-right bank joint is ridiculous! The inlet for the driver's side bank is about 1 and 1/2" - I kid you not, it's smaller than the actual over-weld of the cross pipe. Get the FM y pipe- you'll see a huge increase.

Further, for more sound, remember, the shorter a straight-thru muffler, the deeper and louder. Try a 12" Magnaflow 3" or any othe straight thru.

Keep in mind you'll lose low end with now back pressure, though- that is my experience. I've had a bullit, a flowmaster, a dynomax and finally happy with my spintech. Be careful with staright thru if you've got a 4.6L. If you've got a 5.4, then don't worry. Good luck.

Noel

He has a 94 with a 5.8. He has 1 pre heater and 1 catalytic converter. The Preheater is the "cat" in front of the actual cat. When he gets a high flow cat the technology is different and there is no need for a pre heater. They will cut the pre heater off and that will make way for a new y-pipe. I paid $225 installed for my high flow cat.
