headers... coated or not
headers... coated or not
I recently had damage to my header(s) on my expo due to an accident. I am going to replace them but not sure how to go. I hear alot of good things about the JBA ceramic coated, but WOW!!! the price! The Bassani don't fit a 4X4 , and I was also wondering about the Gibson. I will have my ATI on this weekend and have to consider that as well. Are the JBA worth the extra $$$? Is the ceramic coating worth it or even necessary? I want a shortie cause I don't want to replace the Ypipe / cats etc. I have a Borla cat back.
Thanks.
Thanks.
sorry to hear about the accident,,hope everyone's ok and yourself. Well yes you are right, JBA can be a alittle pricey in IMO I think some hooker shorty headers with a a cermaic coat on them on your expo would look really sharp and make the headers last longer too. Really though it's up to you if you want the headers coated or not. I havn't heard much about the Gibson headers but I'm sure they make some good headers because i do hear alot of good things about Gibson exhaust systems. Hope this helps help you out. Good luck!
All is well
Thank you. Actually, someone hit it on a job site with a skidloader. Very hard though, right into the wheel well, took out a couple cooling lines, a control arm, and a couple tubes.
Anyway, I am mostly concerned about the numbers. JBA show HP/Torque gains range mostly above 4K RPM. I never see those #'s. My old JBA's were not coated, they were used, but very good quality. They were my first mod, so I thought they were the s---! But never really noticed many gains. I read that the Gibson are tuned more for the lower 2-4K RPM range. Thats what I really want.

glad to hear your ok and good thing the expo is still repairable. I was like that too with my first mod on my truck. I went to my local exhaust shop and them cut the muffler on my truck and put a y pipe after the cat. and run straight pipes out the back. I have had them for a month now and i still think there the greatest....lol
anyhow, if the gibson's are more for lower RPM range then i feel strongly about getting those. If you have to rev the **** outta your engine at 4K and above to get what a 10 h.p increase???
that's kinda high for me. You are indeed right about the quality of them......very good. Gibson, IMO is a good exhaust company who makes good stuff but there not the absolute best out there, but thats just me
Good luck with your headers and the expo, and again glad to hear that everything is ok, besides the expo Good luck

00Expo,
Pardon me in advance for not having first-hand experience but a while ago, I read an involved "engineering" article on the web that addressed coated vs. uncoated headers.
My understanding from the article was coated (insulated) headers will not loose as much heat as uncoated ones and, thereby, will pull less heat from the engine to keep efficiencies up.
Here's another website from Burns Engineering that discusses header design in great detail...but nothing on coated vs. uncoated:
