CAI issue??
CAI issue??
Anyone ever experience lesser fuel mileage after installing a cold air intake kit?? I went with an s&b kit and now my trucks averaging 14.4 mpg and always feels sluggish when I request more power from it.
I also put 8 new plugs in it and one coil pack to replace a defective one.
Should I go back to the factory system anyone have any insight on this???
Thanks in advance.
Ryan.

Additionally, your stock intake delivers all the air your stock tune can handle. If you add an aftermarket intake, you need a tune that compensates for that particular intake.

You need to get it off. The 2004 5.4 has a tune that is on the lean side from the factory. You need a custom tune to run an after market CAI.

I greatly appreciate the information. I'll make sure I take it off there asap. Wonder what else I don't know about my truck now :/

To help address yer question above, here is some reading to assist - several links within this thread to follow - suggest you take the time to read all of them.

Regarding CAI's - first, despite what you may have heard, there are NO appreciable gains to be had from an aftermarket CAI on a n/a, otherwise stock truck. The stock intake already outflows the needs of the engine. The claimed gains are marketing bullchit, designed to lighten yer wallet.
Virtually ALL the gains will be in the tuning. The paltry couple/few HP, if any (usually at high rpms) don't justify the overpriced hardware. And will be entirely unnoticeable. Hence - they (CAI's) are a total waste of money - that $$$ should be redirected to a custom-tuned SCT device (X4 recommended).
And yes tuning correction for the MAF transfer function is critical - and is not limited to just an '04. Any truck with a slot-style MAF that relies on the intake's geometry for sampling accuracy is a candidate.
