Question Exhaust for F150 Supercrew

I just bought a 2001 F150 Supercrew XLT 4X4, only gets about 12 MPG. I have a KN filter, want better mileage, without losing power, as I will be towing a 21' boat. What exhaust system will help me?? I have the 5.4 engine.

i would definately recommend going with Gibson..

since you'll be towing, look at the Swept Side or Dual Sport..

i have the Dual Sport, and have been extremely happy with it..

TMAC 126 I'm getting about 17mpg after I had my Borla Split Rear cat-back system installed. If your truck is new your gas milage should get a little better with time.I was getting about 15mpg before I put the Borla exhaust on.Most of my driving is on country roads at about 55 to 60 mph.I'm very happy with my Borla system. It feels like I've gained some power & torque and it comes in mandrel bent stainless steel with a million mile warranty.

Lightbulb A cheaper Alternative

If you want a cheaper alternative to a cat back system, look into getting a 3" aluminized pipe put on after the Y-pipe going into a Flowmaster Delta flow muffler (series 40 for load, 50 for quiet) with a 3" In/ dual 2.5" out and then have them exit either in front of the wheel on teh passenger side (Lightning effect) or dual rear. You could also get a 3" SI/SO and go to the stock location.

I did that on mine with parts (muffler, pipe, tips) & labor less than $200. For the next mod, I will find a shop that does mandrel bending and replace the factory Y-pipe with the Flowmaster. Because of the severity fo the bends necessary, the shop doing the muffler didn't want to do it without a mandrel machine. I was happy that they didn't once I saw what they meant.

There are probably other mufflers that will work as well as the Flowmaster. If you are not in an area with a lot of salt on the road you probably don't need stainless steel. Also look at how long you will keep the truck and the exhaust as modified to determine if you want the long warranty. There is definitely no question that one of the good cat back systems will outlast a less expensive job.

Hope this helps. Note that I am not saying anything bad about the other alternatives. They are just different.

Chuck

Go with the B&B Performance Exhaust system. I just put one on my new Screw and it has to be one of the best sounding systems I have heard. Mellow at idle and cruising, throaty on acceleration. It is a direct replacement and is hand made using all T304 stainless steel. Yea it might be a more expensive system but it will be the only one you will have to buy.

So will a Borla unless you plan on having your vehicle actually last for one million miles...
