S-type 5.0 Installed
S-type 5.0 Installed
I received the S-type cat-back the other day and installed it the first chance I could. Very nice sound and look!
I'll post up a video the next chance I get since I know there aren't many S-type F150 5.0 vids.
The downside disclosure was I did it away from home without access to a variety of sockets and wrenches but everything was still done in an hour by myself, removal included. I recommend sizing up the bolts on the truck to at least have the sockets for the rear bracket nuts and the oe bolts for the resonator to cat flange. Borla dropped the ball on their instructions. They only say to use a 15mm socket, but that's only for their hardware. Doesn't tell you what size to use to remove the original system. I had to use a 6" and 12" crescent wrench since I didn't bring sockets. Also for some reason my rear shackle bolts were installed the wrong direction so I flipped the brackets. Basically to do it the way the picture had I would have to remove the shackle bolt instead of just pulling the nut off and slipping the bracket on. It appears the bracket with go both ways and alignment looks proper. It would of saved me some time thinking to know ahead of time the brackets could be flipped depending on what direction the shackle bolts were put in. Another little gripe is the pipe clamps have soft bolts. It really felt like I was about to strip the bolts even though wrench pressure wasn't much. It takes some torque to tighten down the slip flanges. I need to align the tips a little more the next chance I get but I also plan to retorque all disturbed fittings. And of course if you do the job on the ground as I did you'll have to cut the old muffler pipe to get it out. I almost snaked it out but ended up having to hit it with a sawzaw. Minus the weak directions and fitment of the clamps it looks really nice and sounds great. Vid to come.
Here's their directions. In the diagram they show tailpipe brackets going in the way I put them but the visual pics and all other sources I see online show them installed the other way. Weird. Would have been nice to know they can be fitted in either direction. http://4wheelonline.com/images/borla/pdf/140416.pdf
Thanks for the help when deciding on what kit to buy. I think I'll love this setup alot, especially more than the Flowmasters I'm used to using.

Definitely get a video of your setup! The ATAK is too loud for what I want and, like you said, there aren't many S-Type videos.
The pipe clamps might feel like they have soft bolts because the clamp needs to be compressed or else the pipes won't stay together. One trick I like to do to prevent leaks is to use red RTV on the joints and let it sit for a bit to cure before driving.

I got a vid with a startup and some driving this morning. Will get some driveway revs after work then upload them.
Yeah some clamps just took alot of tighening but one seemed like it wouldn't tighten all the way. I thought about some high temp sealant but will run the exhaust for a bit to see if anything leaks.

Very true. It was hard choosing. Everything sounded great, even straight pipe setups.

I really like the sound of it, especially. I had a Magnaflow exhaust on my 05 that I thought sounded good until I was driving another vehicle alongside while my wife was driving and heard a very annoying drone. I had thought of just staying stock on my new F150 but I'm definitely going to look into this Borla S-type.
I bought Borla because I didn't want drone. There is none with this system. You can hear the exhaust on acceleration but as you cruise it gets real quiet. The new 5.0s sound great with anything. I just wanted a deep note and quiet cabin. I've already had a few compliments on the sound.
From the clips that I've seen, I prefer the S-type over the ATAK.....just sounds better to me. Have you noticed any improvement in gas mileage? And I really like the dual exhaust setup with this system.
Same here. I'm a fan of dual rear pipes on a truck.
I can't say that I have noticed better gas milage. It might actually be worse at the moment due to having a little fun with the new exhaust. I get such crap mileage where I drive anyways so I've given up on watching it much. Right now the mpg says 15.3 for the life of the vehicle, ~1500 miles.
