Borla vs Flowmaster

I swapped out my Flowmaster Super 40 for a Borla. They sound EXACTLY the same, with the Borla being maybe a little less raspy. I put 3 full tanks of gas through the truck and averaged 0.21 mpg better since adding the Borla and Gott's mod. Its hardly an improvement, so I guess this goes to show that exhaust systems (particularly cat-backs) are just noise makers. I will say that the truck is a lot more responsive with the Borla muffler. With the Flowmaster the truck always felt like it was driving into the wind. It does not feel like that at all now probably because of the Borla's straight through design. Below I took a flashlight and stuck it on the inlet side of both mufflers. You can see light out the other end with the Borla, but not the Flowmaster.

I'm very happy with the quality of the Borla. The Flowmaster only has a few thousand miles on it and already it looks bad. With WI winters I would have been lucky to get 2 years out of it. You get what you pay for at the end of the day.

So if cat backs just make noise, what kind would actually help out your truck in terms of performance, mpg, hp? I have s Magnaflow SIDO wit some SS tips. If I switched over to DIDO with an X-pipe how would that affect my truck?

Not to be rude but I believe we've answered this for you already in another thread..
But yes doing a di/do would help but more so high up in the rpm range.
You won't get much from a simple exhaust. Now add headers and custom tune then you're getting some where..

If you get a DI/DO magnaflow or Borla Pro XS, you do not need an X-pipe. It is built in.

Are y'all talking about doing away with the cats I have the cats on my truck but when I run headers Im taking them off. We don't have inspections here. Do I need a xpipe? Or will pipes straight back from each header with two mufflers work?01 screw 4x4 5.4

First you'll need a tune to shut off your rear O2s or do the gotts O2 mod...
Secondly an x pipe is just a cross over pipe to replace your stock y pipe so you can run duals..

I was thinking the same thing! Good eye! But it does look to read Flowmaster embedded on the case. The 19" case Borla next to that tiny lunch box, does not look like a Super 40. More like a single chamber Flowmaster Looks like the condition of the single chamber from my girlfriend's Dodge Ram! Can you measure the case length of the Flowmaster muffler?

So 08FX4SC, you are saying the tone is similar with the ProXS, and the volume is about equal to? If not only a hair calmer and more mellow? The size of the Borla makes it look impossible but Borla is #1 for a reason! Maybe I will stick one on my 5spd Cavy.

The case length of the Flowmaster Super 40 is 10.5", while the Borla is technically 18" but measures to 19"

The Borla is not any quieter than the Super 40. It may even be a bit louder (especially when I get on it), but it is more refined and mellow than the Super 40 if you listen closely. When I start the truck up and pull out of my driveway and cruise through town I cannot notice a difference in tone between the two. This is from my experience inside the cab. My neighbors are still not any happier with me. I got it because I thought it would have a lower volume. What I love the most though is that with the Borla, I have less vibrations entering inside the cab when I accelerate / cruise the highway. I think the baffles inside the Flowmaster cause that to happen. Overall my truck runs better and it cruises easier at high speeds( 75mph+).

I wanted a Borla from the start, but I also wanted a dual side rear exit; only Flowmaster offered that in a bolt-on Catback at the time. This Borla will outast the cheap 409 Flowmaster system that is still on there. I'll custom make a new system when it rots away in a year or two.
