Recent muffler shop report

Hey guys I have an 05 super crew with the 5.4. I went to a local muffler shop this morning to get a quote for true duals (x-pipe to 3in tubing, borla xr1s) however I was told by the mechanic there that it would be very difficult to do that setup due to the many bends to maneuver around the gas tank. He also said that the left side exhaust may not have any improved performance due to these bends. After doing some research on here, I was very disappointed when I heard this as that was my ideal setup. What do you guys think about this? Should I still go with this setup? Would it sound different due to all of the bends he was telling me about? Thanks guys

How are you wanting your duals to exit? Lots of people have true duals with no problems.

I'm leaning towards 45's out the back. That's what I thought too, he told me it was something with how the gas tanks on the supercrew short box are moved back so it's harder to bend pipe around that.

Oh buddy I don't know the specifications of that. I have a supercab short bed so my exhaust work has been relatively easy and cheap lol it's a short truck with a big motor. I don't see why or how he can't do that honestly. The gas tank is nowhere near the exit location. If he ran it under it would probably look ugly with a piece of pipe way down low, you know? Try asking another shop and see what they think or do some Google searching to see if anyone else has this problem.

try a different shop, not everyone has the same tubing bender so a job HE cant do, might not be impossible for someone with a different bender

FYI....true duals don't have an x pipe at all....

Wasn't the idiot smart enough to keep everything in the stock location then run it up and over the axel and the run the drivers side around the spare along with running the passenger side in relatively the stock location???

He must need a paint by number diagram....

I had a 2010 4.6 regular cab and what you posted is exactly how I had a Maxi muffler shop to do it. I used the same SI/DO but used 2.5" on the dual outs. It is very close to the drivers side of the spare and there is no heat shield on that side. I took some ties and pulled my brake and rear vent lines over a way from the pipe on that side and put some insulating tape on them too for extra protection. Maxi wanted to use 2.25 out, but I wanted 2.5 out and thats what we done. Exit was done on about 45* angles. It can be done and neatly as long as you have someone with good experience. Talk to whoever is suppose to do it and make sure they are confident, no deer in the headlights look!

That installer is a complete moron if he can not run dual midpipes on your truck. Keep your truck away from them.

take the shops advise. dual exhaust does have more bends, and isn't better. It's one of the myths of modding. Just like long tube headers.

Cool

Yea, the guy sounds lazy or something. www.stainlessworks.net. I have a complete system on my '11 Lariat with the 6.2. It is soooo bad. They make systems for your too. Headers, exhaust, cats, what ever you need. Check them out. Mine has been awesome and flawless.....

Just re-read the OP. I would hope you do not seriously want to run 3" true duals on a 5.4L... You would need a engine with about 100 more cubic inches to make it worth while of running 3" true dual. 2.5" is overkill even. Stick to that at maxium.

I looked into it too... on numerous truck forums (all makes) si/do hold a louder exhaust note and they said it felt like it had more torque. Seems pointless to me performance and cost wise for true duals.

No doubt. 8 cyls make more noise with a single muffler than a V8 with two exhausts each with its own muffler.

F-bodys with the SI/DO style exhausts are very loudened up with just a cat-back. Compared to a Mustang GT with stock 2.25" dual exhausts. Granted push-rods are much louder naturally than .modular blocks.

Go to a different shop. I have duals on mine and the shop did a great job.
