05 5.4 Bad Cat and Exhaust question

I've had some rattling on the underside of my truck for a few months now and finally took it in to a mom and pop shop to have it looked at. I got a call that the catalytic converter has gone bad and was causing the rattle. I thought this might be the case since I had a code a few months back about the cats. They said that Ford charges $1,400 but they could get one from Napa for $400.

I told them to hold off since I live in a city that I don't have to go through inspections. I want to replace the exhaust system anyway since its stock.

At this point, would I just need the midpipe, cat-backs and the O2 sensors? He warned that my mpg would go way down, but I dont see that happening as bad as he says.

Also, if I go that route, would I need to get a custom tune for my Edge? I am running the tow tune now.

Thanks in advance.

You could go with a pair of magnaflo 94136...
Amazon Amazon

No custom tunes would be needed if you changed yer cats....

Would those be fairly easy to install myself? I've done a *little* exhause work on my old 04 Mach 1, but nothing on this F150.

They need to be welded in.....by removing the down tube off the exhaust manifold it would make the job a lot easier....

Well, I spoke to a muffler shop and they said that the welding could not be done when I asked. They also quoted about $1,400 also to replace.

What options (other than the welding) do I have?

Get out of the city area and take it elsewhere. The downpipes need removed for installation, and it should cost a max of $200 for the work, $160 for the cats tops.

Well, the problem may have solved itself. After doing a little more searching on this site, I found a post that linked to an EPA warranty on vehicles built after 1996 that has a federal warranty on emissions components. I'm lucky in the fact that my truck is a 2005 and has 77k on the clock.

I called my local dealership and the service guy knew about the warranty and they are going to fix free of charge.

Here is the link to the EPA warranty.
