How long have your original cats lasted?

My 98 f150 just turned 150,000 miles old today I know there is a lot of knowledge on here I so need you know what you all think. I am seriously considering cutting out the cats and putting magnaflow high flow cats even though mine seam to be doing just fine at the moment. I don't want to buy the full magnaflow Y pipe with the cats since that's way to spendy around $850 give or take a few $ . So I simply want to just cut the old cats out and put the new ones in but what should I do with those pre cat resignators cut them off? One of them rattles a bit on from the heat shield not too bad and not all the time but annoying when it does happen.

This is what is says on TroyerPerformance website.

"On vehicles with 4 catalytic converters (2 cats on each side of the motor, such as 1997 & up Ford F-150, Expedition, etc.), you only need 2 of these to replace all 4 factory cats."

Are you guys in agreement with that statement ?

Also can someone help me out with which size I should be getting for my truck I'm thinking 2.25 but not sure might be 2.50

Here is what I don't want to do to spendy.

And here is what I'm thinking about.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MPE-47256/

My current set up is JBA shorty headers ( I know most of you don't like them but they are staying). And Magnaflow SI/SO 3 inch tube 4 inch tip. All of my o2 sensors have been replaced within the last year.

I'm sure I will have to replace my cats eventually they only pressing reason I want to do it now is going to be upgrading my edge to a gryphon and want to do this before do it so I wont have to pay for my upgrades all over again.

Thanks all!

I've got over 233,000 miles on mine.. Pretty much my whole truck is stock, except for the old 3" cat back I got 10 years ago..

Sounds like you are looking to do an entire 'system'? If that's the case, what you propose sounds like what other's have done and seem to like the results.

I got the jba too. I cut all four out 4 years ago and replaced with Maggie high flows and not have had a problem or cel since. The headers within the past month and still no cel even with an egr delete that it's not tuned for. I've only seen it once, the cel light and that was three four years ago so maybe it's burnt out but it's running great.

I'd get rid of those resonators if your getting high flows. I had a shop start from the manifold, my down pipe was rotted, with pipe and then put in the high flow and tie it in to the stock y set up. A good custom shop can do what you want. It's not a lot of pipe or welding so it should be cheap.

Haha yes they were but my brother owed me a favor... So he did most of the work while I supervised. He's been using the truck for the past few months so it was kind of like rent... He was without a vehicle and I got my commuter car. So I lucked out. I bit the bullet on price of headers tho and helped my brother learn valuable mechanics lessons.

In terms of sound it'll be crisper. Little louder but nothing crazy. Mines pretty quiet unless I get on it. Even on the highway. Cruising it purs till I hammer down...

Yeah I don't want it to loud which is one of the reasons I went with the magnaflow SI/SO rather than duals . Its the same way right now roars when you put your foot into it but just a nice crisp sound and no drone at all. I'm thinking my cats might be a little plugged right now so I want to replace them before I upgrade my edge to a gryphon that I way I dont need to get my tunes done again. I will be done with all my performance stuff after that dont think I want to do anything to the engine itself too complex and too expensive for a 13 year old truck. Dont get me wrong I love my truck but after I drove my brother in laws 470hp mustang that went 0 - 60mph in around 4 seconds I knew what my next toy was going to be. Once I get my custom tunes and new cats I will feel like its a complete project .

Yeah I hear ya. Next thing I need is to get my edge cs custom tuned from php. They won't do edge evos anymore I heard so I don't know which one you got but you might wanna look into that. Only 97-03. something about the cords. After custom tunes and 4.10s I'm done, 4.10s because I haul more than I ought to. Trucks a truck I got toys for fun, street glide, sled y'know.

CATs did well but going now.

I have a 4.6 2WD F-150, has 226K on it and they "just" started to rattle and make noise. I moved from CA to AZ and so don't need the CA models and am LOOKING to find aftermarkets to replace (believe the '97s had just one on each side but not sure)... them. Magnaflows seem to be the replacement of choice at a reasonable price. Will open a thread to inquire from the more knowledgeable minds here about replacements. But 226K is not bad at all (wish my radiators had gone that long!).
