Out of State CATS...
Out of State CATS...
So, I have complained that I have a bad catalytic converter on my truck...I get the pesky P0430 code about every 300-500 miles for the last year and a half...
Most people would say just replace the CAT...well here in CA the only one available is OEM Ford for about $ 2400...Thank you Air Resource Board!
I have put this off as long as I can...I will have to have the truck smogged by August...
So, If I magically get a set of out of state catalytic converters (willing to change both sides for about $900) do you think I will pass smog? Tailpipe emissions that is...They do hook into the computer, and dyno with tailpipe test in my area... Looking at FordPartsonline, all of the CATS are the same part #...and same price...
Regards!

if you can spend $900 for a set of highflows, can I be the one to install 'em as I'll be able to pocket at least $700 of that...
find a decent shop over the state line, and and have the rear swapped for high flow cats, and it'll probably smog better than it did before

I don't even care about the high flows...I was looking at the magnaflow direct fits...that way I can install myself (hopefully)! The California Air Resource Board has basically banned most aftermarket replacements...not just for Fords...If I had a F250 I could get an aftermarket...
My concern is that it won't pass the tailpipe test (visual is another concern)...some have indicated it wont...this is almost the difference between burning the truck or going bankrupt to fix it...its only worth about $10k...
I know several good welders...so I could probably do it piece by piece, but I think the direct fits would ultimately be the most cost effective.
I also suspect that my muffler is plugged up and causing the code...at times you can barely feel exhaust coming out of the tail pipe. I reset the code after it pops up, but when it does pop up, I get an actual DTC, and a pending...
