Exhaust Questions for 07 5.4 Screw

Hi all-
First post so I’ll start off by saying this is a great site with great folks. I’ve been able to find a ton of info here, but now time to contribute (well mostly ask for now).

My truck is a 07 5.4 screw that I’m getting ready to start increasing performance (and sound) on. I’ll be doing the Gotts Mod, a PHP Gryphon and sido exhaust (leaving the cats as-is since it’s a 07).

For the begining and end of the exhaust I’m going to get the Magnaflow Y pipe (2.5 in/out) and 12x3.5 rolled ss tips will exit at 45 on each side.

For the muffler I’m having a hard time deciding between the 14” and 18” oval Magnaflows. I know they don’t drone, but I’m trying to make sure I don’t get an annoying level of cab noise; meaning I want to know it’s there (even at idle) but don’t want it to be so loud that no one wants to ride in the back ½ of the cab. I’m leaning 14” because from what I can tell 18 seems like I wouldn’t even know I had it without getting into the pedal, but let me know if you guys think otherwise. I’ve listened to youtube vids but it’s hard for me tell a whole lot other than tone.

Are the 14s quieter in the cab then flowmaster 40s (outside of the drone) or a fullboar muffler? I had a fullboar on my last truck (01 supercab 4.6) and it sounded great but seemed to have a lot of rear cab noise after a year.

I was planning to go 2.5 in/out. The main reason I’m doing the Gotts, Gryphon and exhaust is because we bought a bigger boat last year. It weighs around 7K on the trailer so I want to make sure I won’t be sacrificing torque with this setup.

Thoughts?

Sorry for the long 1st post!

I vote 14" since your leaving the cats alone. The 14" will be quieter inside and out compared to a flowmaster, but it will sound a lot better!

Hey Doubles, newbie myself. I am doing something very similar on my 05 this Tuesday morning. I am going to run a Magnaflow Y 2.5" in 3" out and 3" mid pipe into a 14" Magnaflow 2.5" DO with 18x4" SS tips exiting at 90 degrees behind the tire. I should be able to give you the full review by lunchtime on Tuesday. This set up came to be from the advice of the members as well as listening to countless exhaust vids! I don't want the volume so much as I do the tone. There are a couple guys with Magnapacks as well that sound awesome from the outside, I cannot speak on the cab volume.

Just a note, 12" long tips will look dinky exiting at 45s, go 18".

18 would probably be too quiet, I've heard 2.5 SIDO 14 and its just right. On the 12" tips unless you plan on tucking them in so they are angled down I would go longer. I have 3.5x12 and I'm pretty annoyed cuz the pipe is showing and makes the tips look small and it just doesn't look right to me. No torque will be loss, unless you change pipe diameter everything is fine. As for the gryphon I'm waiting on my tunes so excited!

Thanks for the info guys, much appreciated. I'll go w/ 18" tips and stick with the 14" muffler.

Remingtonry: would be great to get your input after the install. I came up with the setup the same way you did.

Also, since I'm not changing the pipe diameter am I really doing anything with the addition of the Y pipe? I know the stock is less then desirable but wasn't sure if I'll see any benefit without going to bigger pipe.

Will be glad to let you know. Fro what I read/could see, the stock Y is a real pinch point. The Magnaflow Y is smooth and open, and for about $25 I figured I may as well since they'll be in there anyway. I doubt it has a felt day and night difference, but every little bit helps in the end. I also understand that it will help improve sound a little as well.

Doubles,

VERY happy with it! Authoratative cold start. Deep mellow rumble at idle. low toned, powerful sound as you go through gears (1800-2000 sounds real sexy) and completely mellows out once you get to speed. In the cab sounds great, iand you don't hear much at all after it settles in to gear. I started a thread when the muffler arrived and just posted my picks there. I'll make a video after lunch and see if I can get it on there as well.

Got the exhaust put on today! Wow! The sound is exactly what i was looking for both inside and out. Thanks for the recommendations. I'm really glad I went with the 14" muffler and the 18" tips (as recommended). I think anything shorter for the tips would not have looked the way I hoping and had I not gotten anyone's help I would have had to learn the hard way. Now just waiting for the Gryphon.

Did you go with the sido? Also, what size did you run between the y and muffler?
