How much are old cats worth for scrap??
I'm going to get true duals, and I'm thinking about getting high flow cats too. To get true duals with an x-pipe crossover and high flow cats is going to cost a little more than I want to spend. How much money could I expect to get from a scrap yard for my old factory cats? I have a 2006 5.4L V8. It's the 2 big cat setup, not the 4 cat system.
I don't have a welder or pipe bender, so I'm going to have to take it to a shop to have it done. I figured my old cats must be worth a decent amount because I've heard of people stealing them off people's cars to sell them for scrap
Yeah... I'm sure you will get some, because they are kind of heavy.. but if your parts list/install fee was anything like mine, then it won't put a small dent in it..
$350 in parts and about $350-$400 in install for mine... But it sounds bad ***, so I am happy

ive heard of people selling them to salvage yards and getting a pretty penny for them. i was gonna sell my old cats but the shop kept them for proper disposal so im sure they sold them. but ive also heard if you take all the internals out of the cats that you get more money from selling them individually than selling the cat sll together. idk if there is any truth to that. but give it a shop id call a salvage yard first i doubt youll get much off of it for scrap

I'll call in the morning and post how much they say they are worth
I called several scrap yards. One said $40-$50 for each one. One said about $15 for each one. One said they would have to see them to give me a number. New magnaflow high flow cats only cost $55 so It's almost an even swap. It's worth paying an extra $10 or so for high flows
Apparently the price varies a lot according to what vehicle it comes off of
I would have thought that $15 each would have been on the high end. I have taken truck and trailer loads of scrap steel to salvage yards and only gotten like $250. I think typically steel goes for around $0.20 per pound. Let us know how much they give you if you take them in!
