Question about tips.

Alright so the other day I had the local shop put my exhaust together. You can see it in my sig. I looked this morning and they ran the piping straight up through the tips about 6"-7". I was just wondering if it's normal for the tips to be on there so far. I thought you'd want as much of The tip as possible past the end of the tubing. Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't it help the sound out a little if it was measured closer and redone.

The guys at the shop said it didn't matter. I just have a hard time believing that. Especially after paying for 18" tips, i should want all 18"s right? Not just ten or so

I would say so I think it would make it louder but I have been wrong before. I installed my own and I made sure I used as much as I could.

In the old days, the pipes would be cut to the apprximate finished length, then slipping the tips over for 100% coverage (which also insulated the tips from the internal heat/soot which made them last also.....but in reality, you would typically adjust the tips to line them up evenly....

Now if you are running tips that start adapt/increase the diameter, then you really want to avoid having a smally pipe pertrude past the inital insert area, because that would encourage condensation trapping it inbetween the tailpipe & tip, encouraging rust.

In regards to sound, I doubt there would be any difference.

Bow,

If you are from MS, there is a shop outside of Byhalia that is cheap and will make it right. Give Star Muffler and Tire a call (662) 851-0100 and ask for Paul...he'll set you up nicely and do a helluva job. There are quite a few shops around Memphis but everyone I spoke to before getting my Flows put on praised them highly. He did my whole set-up for just over $225 and I couldn't be happier. If you wanna hear my truck, look me up on YouTube--same screen-name as here.

Will check it out man. Always up for watching and hearing a nice sounding truck. I'll save that number so if I ever need anything done I'll go there. What would you do? I mean would you worry about having the pipes trimmed off to the correct length or just let it be?

I just spoke to a friend of mine and he said he would not go any deeper than 4" into an 18" tip. It won't sound as good and since you lose low end torque with duals anyway, I'm guessing it could hurt performance. Personally, I wouldn't deal with that shop again. I don't know what your finances are/how much gas you are able to expend, but I would give Paul a call and make the 45 minute trip north to see how well he fixes what the Oxford shop messed up. I'll PM u my cell number--I've gotta meet my gf in Abbeville on the side of 7 Thursday afternoon so if you aren't working we can meet up and I'll see how the setup looks and sounds, if you'd like.

Alright thanks man. Yeah I'll have to get it fixed. Probably just let the shop here fix it for free and make it right. Then just never go back. Don't know how much time you've spent in oxford but most people around here seem to be very big a holes.

I'll have to see what's going on thursday but I don't mind meeting up somewhere. I'd like to hear yours too. I watched the YouTube video. It sounds really nice. A nice tone to it. I'll probably find out tommorrow whether or not I'd be able to come. I'll definately let you know though

I'm an '06 UofM grad--trust me, I know how you feel about the Oxford folks and I feel the same way lol.

Thanks for the kind words about the exhaust...I'm proud of it, although I do get a few additional sideways glances from cops that I wouldn't have before

Just give me a shout about meeting up--I could be in Abbeville anytime around 4, Oxford about 4:15. If not, there'll be another time. Good luck getting your shop to fix things, just watch them like a hawk....

Sweet. I'll be headed there in a year or two. Just graduated from high school. The whole exhaust thing was my graduation present from my gf. I'm going to start out at northwest though. Hopefully for only a year till I get down to state.

Oh, boy you made me feel old and sorry for you in the same post

I graduated high school in 2000 so I'm getting up in years, and I meant Ole Miss was my school. Still feel the same way about Oxford people, though lol and both schools do have their strengths so just enjoy State. College can be a fun experience no matter where you go...

It's all good, at least you aren't running away from Mississippi like a lot of guys and ladies are....we do have good schools and universities here you just have to look for them. Ok enough of my sandbox I'm getting off-topic here lol

Having the exhaust tubing a few inches inside the pipe isn't bad, but it does make it a tiny pinch quieter when under throttle because it isn't getting the full tips body to project its sound through to make it as hollow and megaphone'd as possible. And visually it is highly unappealing. If it wont be a problem to fix I would request it be fixed.
